Shepherds, Simeon, Anna and the wise men all recognized and worshipped the Savior, and like Jesus at twelve, I can be about my Father’s business and grow the way He grew.

I can worship Jesus Christ, recognize Him when the Holy Ghost testifies, and grow in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and others.

Know the chapters

Matthew 2 and Luke 2 read like a collection of witness statements. Luke gives us the decree of Caesar Augustus that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, the manger “because there was no room for them in the inn,” and shepherds who heard an angel, came “with haste,” and then “made known abroad” what they saw (Luke 2:1–20). Forty days later, at the temple, Simeon, who had been promised by the Holy Ghost that he would see the Lord’s Christ before he died, held the baby and praised God, and Anna, a prophetess of about 84 who served in the temple “with fastings and prayers night and day,” gave thanks and told others (Luke 2:25–38). Matthew adds wise men who followed a star, a nervous King Herod, gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, and Joseph’s second and third angel dreams that sent the family to Egypt and back.

Nine- to eleven-year-olds love to spot prophecy coming true, and this week is full of it. The chief priests told Herod exactly where Christ would be born by quoting Micah 5:2 (Matthew 2:5–6). Isaiah 9:6 promised “unto us a child is born.” In the Book of Mormon, Samuel the Lamanite prophesied a new star and a night without darkness (Helaman 14:2–5), fulfilled in 3 Nephi 1:15–21. Notice too that the wise men found a “young child” in a “house” (Matthew 2:11), so they probably came some time after the shepherds. Keep Herod brief: a jealous king whose plans God defeated by warning Joseph. You don’t need to teach Matthew 2:16 to this class.

Luke 2:41–52 is the only story we have of Jesus as a youth. At twelve He stayed behind at the temple, “sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions,” and told His worried parents, “wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” (“wist” means “know”). Then He went home and “was subject unto them.” This is perfect for your class: many of them will turn twelve soon, go to the temple to do baptisms for the dead, and join deacons quorums and Young Women classes.

Luke 2:52 says Jesus “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” The Church’s Children and Youth program is built on those same four areas: intellectual, physical, spiritual and social. Kids can set real goals in each area, just as Jesus grew in each. Worship is more than a feeling at Christmas; it’s the shepherds hurrying, Simeon waiting, the wise men giving their best, and a boy who wanted to be in His Father’s house.

Before class

  1. Write each prophecy reference on its own slip and seal it in an envelope marked with how long before Jesus’s birth it was given. Envelope 1 (about 700 years before): Micah 5:2. Envelope 2 (about 700 years before): Isaiah 9:6. Envelope 3 (5 years before): Helaman 14:2–5, Samuel the Lamanite.
  2. Tape the four place signs on the four walls: Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Egypt, Nazareth (Jerusalem and Bethlehem close together, Egypt far away).
  3. Bookmark verses for your Scripture Readers: Luke 2:10–11, 2:26, 2:30–32, 2:38, Matthew 2:2, 2:11 and Luke 2:49.
  4. Decide where the “temple” is in your room (a corner with chairs in a circle for the temple teachers in scene 10).
  5. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab so Roles and the Name Spinner work.

If your class is wild

  • Give Herod to a kid who likes drama, but coach them: Herod is sneaky and nervous, not scary. Keep him to one scene.
  • The Map Dash is a walking game. Anyone who runs does five slow “camel steps” back to the middle.
  • Nobody plays Jesus. Baby Jesus is the doll or blanket, and in scene 10 an empty chair in the middle of the temple teachers stands for Him while you read His words.
  • Put your best reader on Simeon. Luke 2:29–32 is beautiful read slowly.
  • If the room gets loud, whisper Anna’s line: “She spake of him.” Wait until everyone is whispering it back.

1. Hook

Sealed Prophecies

Opening prophecies written long before Jesus was born shows kids that God told His people exactly what was coming.

  1. Hold up the three sealed envelopes. Say: “These predictions were made before Jesus was born. Let’s see if they came true.”
  2. Pick three kids to open one envelope each, find the verse and read it aloud: Micah 5:2, Isaiah 9:6, Helaman 14:2–5.
  3. After each, the class guesses: What is it predicting? Where did it come true? (Bethlehem; a child born who is the mighty God; a new star and a night with no darkness.)
  4. SAY“Micah wrote about 700 years early. Samuel the Lamanite, just five years early. Today we’ll watch those promises come true, and meet the people who recognized Jesus when they saw Him.”

  1. SAY“I’m going to read three predictions that were made before Jesus was born. Your job: figure out what they’re predicting.”

Story Drama: Witnesses of the Child

Kids act out each witness and notice how differently people came to Jesus: hurrying, waiting, traveling far.

  2. Remind everyone: nobody plays Jesus. The doll (or blanket) is Baby Jesus, and in scene 10 an empty chair stands for Him while you read His words.

Scripture Spotlight: Luke 2:49

Kids memorize the first words of Jesus recorded in the New Testament and think about what His Father’s business is.

  2. Ask: “What does ‘wist’ mean?” (Know.) Say it three times: normal, fast as you can, then slow and reverent.

Luke 2:52 becomes a real Children and Youth goal each kid can start this week.

  1. Have a kid read Luke 2:52. Ask: “What four ways did Jesus grow?” Point to a body part for each: wisdom (head), stature (tall arms), favor with God (hands pointing up), favor with man (hand on a neighbor’s shoulder).
  2. SAY“The Children and Youth program uses these exact four areas: intellectual, physical, spiritual and social.”
  3. Hand out cards. Each kid writes one small goal for this month in any one area (read a chapter a day, learn to cook one meal, pray morning and night, sit by someone new at lunch).
  4. Pairs share their goals. Say: “Take this card home and put it where you’ll see it every day.”

  1. 📜🫏 A decree sends them to Bethlehem

    Caesar Augustus ordered everyone in his empire to be counted and taxed in their family’s hometown. Joseph was from the family of King David, so he and Mary made the long trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the city of David. Mary was about to have her baby.

    🎬 Mary and Joseph walk slowly around the room. Everyone else walks in place like a busy crowd heading home.

  2. 🏠🌾 No room in the inn

    When they got to Bethlehem, there was no room for them in the inn. That night Mary’s firstborn son was born. She wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, a feeding trough for animals.

    🎬 Mary gently lays Baby Jesus (the doll or blanket) on a chair. Everyone freezes silently for three seconds.

  3. 🐑👼✨ Shepherds, an angel, and great fear

    Out in the fields, shepherds were watching their flocks at night. Suddenly an angel stood by them, the glory of the Lord shone all around, and they were terrified. The angel said not to fear, because he had news for everyone.

    🎬 Shepherds crouch and cover their eyes. A Scripture Reader reads Luke 2:10–11.

  4. 👼👼👼 “Glory to God in the highest”

    Suddenly the sky was full of angels, a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God. Then they were gone, and the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing the Lord has told us about.”

    🎬 Everyone stands and says together, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!”

  5. 🏃‍♂️🌟 They came with haste

    The shepherds hurried and found Mary, Joseph and the baby lying in a manger, exactly as the angel said. Afterward they told everyone what they had seen and heard. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

    🎬 Shepherds jog in place, kneel by the manger, then turn and whisper the news to everyone. Mary puts a hand on her heart.

  6. 🏛️👴 Simeon had been promised

    Forty days later, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem. The Holy Ghost had promised an old man named Simeon that he would not die before he saw the Lord’s Christ. That day the Spirit led Simeon to the temple. He took the baby in his arms and praised God.

    🎬 A reader reads Luke 2:26. Simeon gently holds the doll, looks up, and reads Luke 2:30–32 slowly.

  7. 👵🙏 Anna spoke of Him to everyone

    Anna was a prophetess, about 84 years old, who never left the temple. She worshipped there night and day with fasting and prayer. She came in at that very moment, gave thanks, and told everyone who was waiting for the Redeemer about this child.

    🎬 Anna folds her arms, bows, then walks to each kid and whispers, “He’s here.” A reader reads Luke 2:38.

  8. 🐪🤴 Wise men ask, and Herod worries

    Wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem asking where the newborn King of the Jews was, because they had seen His star. King Herod was troubled. His scribes looked in the prophets and told him: Bethlehem. Herod sent the wise men there and pretended he wanted to worship too.

    🎬 Wise Men read Matthew 2:2 together. Herod rubs his hands nervously and says, “Bring me word… so I can worship him also.”

  9. ⭐🎁 Gold, frankincense and myrrh

    The star went ahead of them and stopped over the house where the young child was. The wise men were overjoyed. They knelt, worshipped Him, and gave Him gold, frankincense and myrrh. God warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod, and an angel warned Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt.

    🎬 Wise Men kneel and hold out pretend treasures, then tiptoe home a different way. Joseph scoops up the doll and leads Mary toward Egypt.

  10. 🏛️🧒 Twelve years old, in His Father’s house

    When Jesus was twelve, His family went to Jerusalem for the Passover. On the way home, Mary and Joseph realized He was missing. After three days of searching they found Him in the temple, listening to the teachers and asking questions, and everyone was amazed at His answers. When Mary said they had been worried, Jesus answered, “How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

    🎬 The Wise Men become temple teachers sitting in a circle around an empty chair. Mary and Joseph search the room and find the circle. The teacher reads Jesus’s words.

Father’s Business Goal

Take the goal you picked from Luke 2:52 (wisdom, stature, favor with God or favor with others) and do something for it every day this week. Tell a parent your goal tonight so they can cheer you on. It can be your first Children and Youth goal of 2027.

Today in Primary we studied Luke 2 and Matthew 2 as a set of witnesses: shepherds who hurried, Simeon and Anna who waited in the temple, and wise men who traveled far to worship Jesus. We opened “sealed prophecies” from Micah, Isaiah and Samuel the Lamanite that came true, and talked about twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple: “wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49). Your child set a small goal from Luke 2:52. Ask them what it is and how you can help.
