I chose Heavenly Father’s plan before I was born, I came to earth to be tested and grow, and Jesus Christ is the only way back to Him, for me and for everyone who ever lived.

I can prepare to meet God by following Jesus Christ like He followed His Father, and help others on both sides of the veil find the way home.

Know the chapters

The 2027 manual adds a Primary lesson for each fast Sunday (Appendix B), which Primary teachers are encouraged to teach on fast Sunday (usually the first Sunday of the month) in place of the regular Come, Follow Me lesson. January starts with the big picture: Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation, the plan of happiness. It answers the three questions every person eventually asks: Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going? It’s fast Sunday, and some of your 9–11-year-olds may be trying to fast with their families for the first time. Children aren’t required to fast. Praise the effort, keep the room upbeat, and skip food rewards today.

Before we were born: Abraham saw the spirits of all people before the world was made, including many noble and great ones, and was told he was chosen before he was born (Abraham 3:22–23; compare Jeremiah 1:5). The Lord said an earth would be made where His children could be proved, to see whether they would do all He commanded (3:24–25). Those who kept their “first estate” (premortal life) would receive a body and a “second estate” (this life), and those who keep their second estate will have glory added upon them forever (3:26). Jesus Christ offered to do His Father’s will and give Him the glory (Moses 4:2; John 6:38); Satan sought to destroy our agency and take God’s honor for himself, and was cast out (Moses 4:1–3). The children of God “shouted for joy” (Job 38:7).

This life: we receive a body, pass through a veil of forgetting, and learn to walk by faith. Alma calls this life the time to prepare to meet God (Alma 34:32). Heavenly Father packs the journey with help: a Savior who took on our pains, sicknesses and sins so He knows how to help us (Alma 7:11–13), the Holy Ghost who shows us what to do (2 Nephi 32:5), apostles and prophets so we aren’t tossed around by every new idea (Ephesians 4:11–14), and strength through Christ (Philippians 4:13). Jesus is not one of many paths home; He is “the way” (John 14:6).

After this life: spirits go to the spirit world, where those who never heard the gospel can be taught (Doctrine and Covenants 138:30–34). Their ordinances are done by proxy in temples, which Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 15:29. Many of your oldest kids can begin doing baptisms for the dead as early as January of the year they turn 12, the same time they move into Young Women or a deacons quorum. Help them see that temple work is the plan being fair to everyone. The Savior invites all to repent, be baptized and stand spotless before Him (3 Nephi 27:19–20), and God will dwell with His people and wipe away all tears (Revelation 21:3–4). Be gentle when death comes up; a child may be grieving someone.

Before class

  1. Write the three questions on a card, seal it in the envelope, and write TOP SECRET on the outside. Tape it under one chair before class.
  2. Bookmark your scriptures for three readers: Abraham 3:24–25, Alma 34:32 and Revelation 21:4.
  3. Bookmark the Mission Gear verses in each set of scriptures: Alma 7:11–12 · 2 Nephi 32:5 · Ephesians 4:11–14 · Philippians 4:13.
  4. Decide which three walls of the room are BEFORE, EARTH and AFTER for the wiggle.
  5. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab so Roles and the Name Spinner can pick them.
  6. Think of one moment when you felt the plan was real for you, maybe at a funeral, a baptism or in the temple. You’ll share it at the end.

If your class is wild

  • It’s fast Sunday. Some kids may be fasting for the first time and feel shaky or cranky. Give them a leadership job (Scripture Reader, Veil Holder, team captain), and quietly tell them you’re proud of them for trying.
  • Nine-to-eleven-year-olds love being treated like agents on a real mission. Stay in character: call them “Agent,” and whisper the classified parts.
  • Nobody plays Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ or Satan in the drama. You read those parts, and the class reacts.
  • In Before, Earth or After?, the rule is speed-walk. Anyone who runs goes back to the BEFORE wall and waits one call.
  • If the Mission Gear race gets loud, the team that reads its verse the clearest (not the fastest) earns a bonus point.

A hidden envelope turns the plan of salvation into a mission they get to choose.

  1. Say in a spy whisper: “Agents, one of you is sitting on classified orders.” Let them check under their chairs.
  2. The finder opens the envelope and reads the card aloud: “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: answer three questions. Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going after this life?”
  3. Ask: “Did you catch the word choose? Nobody can force you to take a mission.”
  4. SAY“Here’s the twist: you already accepted this mission once, before you were born. Today we read the briefing in the scriptures.”

Story Drama: Mission Briefing

Kids act out the whole plan, from Abraham’s vision to the temple to home, and read key verses themselves.

  1. Hand out the roles (tap Roles in Teach Mode). Say: “Nobody plays Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ or Satan. I’ll read their parts.” Everyone left is a Spirit Child.
  2. Give your three Scripture Readers their bookmarked verses (your scriptures or Gospel Library on your phone or tablet).
  3. Read each scene and pause for the readers and actions. The Sound Crew taps each sound.
  4. At scene 3, stop and ask: “Why would a plan that forces everyone to be good actually be a terrible plan?” Take one or two answers.
  5. At scene 8, ask: “Why does the temple make the plan fair?” Then finish with “Welcome home!”

Kids sort harder parts of the plan with their feet, and one tricky call starts a real debate.

  1. Point to your three walls: BEFORE (premortal life), EARTH (this life), AFTER (spirit world, resurrection, judgment).
  2. SAY“I call it, you speed-walk to it. Last one there is the next caller.”

Teams hunt in the scriptures for the help Heavenly Father packed for our journey.

  1. SAY“No agent goes on a mission without gear. What did Heavenly Father pack for us?” Split into two teams, each with scriptures and a captain.
  2. Call a reference. Both teams race to find it; the first team to read it aloud clearly names the gear and earns a point: Alma 7:11–12 (a Savior who knows how you feel) · 2 Nephi 32:5 (the Holy Ghost) · Ephesians 4:11–14 (apostles and prophets) · Philippians 4:13 (strength through Christ).

Kids memorize the verse and think about why Jesus is the way, not just a way.

  1. Lower your voice. Say: “Heavenly Father knew Abraham before he was born, and He knew you too. You chose His plan, and He sent you here on purpose.”
  2. Share one short moment when you felt the plan was real, maybe at a funeral, a baptism or in the temple.
  3. SAY“Today is fast Sunday. Some of you might be fasting for the first time. Whether you’re fasting or not, tonight you can thank Heavenly Father for His plan and ask Him what your next step is.”

    The prophet Abraham saw a vision of a time before the earth was made. He saw the spirits of all of Heavenly Father’s children, and among them were many noble and great ones. The Lord told Abraham he was one of them, chosen before he was born.

    🎬 Spirit Children stand scattered with open, glowing hands. Abraham walks among them, amazed. Point at a few kids: “You were there. And you. And you.”

  2. 🌍📋 “We will make an earth”

    Heavenly Father’s plan was to make an earth where His children could get bodies and show whether they would do everything He asked. It was a test, but the kind that helps you grow, not the kind built to make you fail.

    🎬 Scripture Reader 1 reads Abraham 3:24–25. Everyone counts on their fingers: “Earth! Body! Choose! Grow!”

  3. 🙋💛 Who will be the Savior?

    The plan needed a Savior, because we would sin and our bodies would die. Jesus Christ offered to do His Father’s will and give all the glory to Him. Satan wanted to force everyone, destroy our agency and take the glory for himself. Heavenly Father chose Jesus.

    🎬 You read this scene; nobody plays Jesus or Satan. Spirit Children fold their arms and whisper, “Thank You, Jesus.”

  4. 🎉🙌 The sons of God shouted for joy

    Satan and those who followed him were cast out. But the rest of Heavenly Father’s children understood what this plan meant: a body, a family, a chance to become like Him, and a Savior. The Bible says they shouted for joy. You were in that crowd.

    🎬 Spirit Children give one huge cheer on “3, 2, 1,” then switch to a silent cheer for the rest of class.

  5. 🌫️👶 Through the veil to earth

    Then it was our turn. We passed through a veil of forgetting and were born as tiny babies. We can’t remember living with Heavenly Father, so now we learn to walk by faith.

    🎬 Veil Holders lift their arms like a curtain. The Traveler walks through and curls up. The Earth Family rocks the baby. Switch in a new Traveler.

  6. ⏳🧭 This life is the time to prepare

    The prophet Alma taught that this life is the time to prepare to meet God. Every choice counts: how we treat the new kid, what we watch, whether we pray when nobody’s checking. Earth is where we practice becoming like Heavenly Father.

    🎬 Scripture Reader 2 reads Alma 34:32. The Traveler stands tall. Spirit Children call out real choices; the Traveler steps forward for the good ones.

  7. 🌿✝️ Jesus paid the price and rose

    Everyone takes wrong turns. In Gethsemane and on the cross, Jesus Christ suffered for our sins, and He also took on our pains and sicknesses so He knows exactly how to help us. On the third day He rose from the tomb. Because of Him we can repent, and everyone will be resurrected.

    🎬 The Traveler kneels, then stands. Everyone puts a hand on their heart for three silent seconds.

  8. 🕊️🛕 No one is left out

    When people die, their spirits go to the spirit world. Many people never heard of Jesus while they were alive. Heavenly Father’s plan is fair to all of them: they can be taught there, and we can be baptized for them in the temple. Paul wrote about people being baptized for the dead.

    🎬 Half the Spirit Children sit down, waiting. Two volunteers walk through the room and tap shoulders; each one stands up: “Found you!”

  9. 💧🏡 Welcome home

    Jesus invites everyone to repent, come to Him and be baptized, so we can stand clean before Him. At the end of the journey, God will live with His people and wipe away every tear.

Pick one: (1) Teach your family the plan using the three mission questions, with a scripture for each one. (2) With a parent, open FamilySearch and find one ancestor who may still need temple ordinances. (3) Set one Children and Youth goal that helps you prepare for the temple, and write it where you’ll see it every day.

Today in Primary we studied Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation like a secret mission: Abraham’s vision of us before we were born, our choice to follow the plan, the veil, the Savior who makes the way home, and temple work that reaches people who have died. Ask your child: why would a plan that forced everyone to be good fail? This week your child may want to look at FamilySearch with you or set a Children and Youth goal.

🗺️ Plan Map from Memory · 5 min

  1. Split into two teams with paper and a pencil (or a whiteboard).
  2. Set the Big Timer for two minutes. Each team draws the plan from memory: premortal life, earth, spirit world, resurrection, judgment, home, with arrows.
  3. Teams earn a point for every part they include and a bonus point for a scripture reference on each part.

⚖️ Two Offers in the Council · 4 min

  1. Read Moses 4:1–3 together from the scriptures. Nobody acts the parts.
  2. Make two lists: what Jesus offered and what Satan offered. Circle who each one wanted the glory to go to.
  3. Ask: “Where do you see those same two offers today, the one that respects your choices and the one that tries to control you?”

  1. Show your own family tree printout or FamilySearch on your phone.
  2. Point out one ancestor and tell one thing you know about them.
  3. SAY“In January of the year you turn 12, you can start doing baptisms in the temple for people like this. That’s the plan reaching people in the spirit world.”
