Know the chapters

This is the March fast-Sunday lesson from Appendix B of the 2027 manual, taught in place of the regular Come, Follow Me lesson. The key verse fits fast Sunday perfectly: after fasting forty days, Jesus answered the tempter by saying we live by every word from God, not by bread alone (Matthew 4:2–4). Some kids may be fasting with their families today; children aren’t required to. Skip food rewards and keep the energy positive.

Heavenly Father reveals His will to His prophets (Amos 3:7), from Moses receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1–17) to Lehi seeing the tree of life (1 Nephi 8) to Joseph Smith seeing the Father and the Son (Joseph Smith—History 1:17). Their words, written down, become scripture, which is given by inspiration of God and useful for doctrine, correction and instruction (2 Timothy 3:16). The Lord also teaches that what His servants say when moved by the Holy Ghost is scripture for us (Doctrine and Covenants 68:4), which includes the living prophet today. All of it testifies of Jesus Christ (John 5:39).

Today’s story is Samuel the Lamanite (Helaman 13–16), which the manual points to. The Nephites of Zarahemla threw him out; the Lord told him to go back, and when they wouldn’t let him in, he preached from the city wall (Helaman 13:2–4). He prophesied that in five years the Son of God would be born, with a day, a night and a day without darkness and a new star as the sign (14:2–5), and that at the Savior’s death there would be darkness and many saints would rise and appear to many (14:20–25). Believers sought out the prophet Nephi, son of Helaman, to be baptized; others threw stones and shot arrows but could not hit him (16:1–2). The sign came exactly as he said (3 Nephi 1:15–21). Years later the resurrected Savior asked that Nephi’s son, also named Nephi and one of His twelve Nephite disciples, bring the records, pointed out that Samuel’s prophecy about the saints rising had not been written, and commanded that it be added (3 Nephi 23:7–13). Nine-to-eleven-year-olds love this detail: the Savior Himself checked the scriptures for a missing entry.

The Lord invites more than reading: feast on the words of Christ, and they will tell you what to do (2 Nephi 32:3); listen to and hold fast to the word of God, and temptations won’t overpower you (1 Nephi 15:23–24); treasure up His words, and the right words will come when you need them (Doctrine and Covenants 84:85). Jesus modeled this in the wilderness: all three times He answered with “It is written,” quoting Deuteronomy (compare Matthew 4:4, 7, 10 with Deuteronomy 8:3; 6:16; 6:13). Your oldest kids are close to Young Women and deacons quorum lessons where they’ll be asked to teach from scripture; today is good practice.

  1. Write the hook message on the paper and fold it: “Samuel saw seven silver stars sparkle south of the city wall.”
  2. Bookmark your scriptures for three readers: Helaman 13:3–4, Helaman 14:2–5 and 3 Nephi 23:9–11.
  3. Bookmark one passage in each set of scriptures: 2 Nephi 32:3 · 1 Nephi 15:23–24 · Doctrine and Covenants 84:85.
  4. In your own scriptures, find the footnotes on Matthew 4:4, 4:7 and 4:10 that point to Deuteronomy.
  5. Read one short thing the living prophet has taught recently so you can share it in the testimony.
  6. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab so Roles and the Name Spinner can pick them.

If your class is wild

  • It’s fast Sunday. Some kids may be hungry and grumpy. Give your crankiest kid the most dramatic job: Samuel on the wall, or the captain of the arrow crew.
  • Stones and arrows in the drama are invisible and super slow motion, and Samuel dodges like it’s a movie. Nobody throws anything real, and nobody touches anyone.
  • Nobody plays Jesus Christ in scene 8. Nephi kneels facing an empty spot, and you read the Savior’s words.
  • The Silent Prophet Timeline is a no-talking challenge. If someone talks, the whole class freezes for three seconds, then continues. It calms the room fast.
  • Competitive kids will want to win the verse races. Give the point for the clearest reading, not just the fastest.

1. Hook

Whisper vs. Write

A two-team race shows why the Lord has prophets write His words down instead of just passing them along.

  1. Make two lines. Team Whisper: whisper the message to the first kid, and it gets whispered down the line, once each, no repeats.
  2. Team Write: hand the first kid the folded paper. It gets passed down the line; each kid reads it silently.
  3. The last kid on each team says the message out loud. Read the real one: “Samuel saw seven silver stars sparkle south of the city wall.”
  4. Ask: “Which team got it right? Why?” Say: “Heavenly Father doesn’t want His words to drift. So He has His prophets write them down. Today we’ll see Jesus Himself check that a prophecy was written.”

Story Drama: The Prophecy That Almost Went Missing

Samuel’s prophecy and the Savior’s visit show that prophets speak for God and that He cares that their words are recorded.

  1. Hand out the roles (tap Roles in Teach Mode). Say: “Nobody plays the Lord or Jesus. I’ll read Their words.” Everyone left is a Star and on the Sound Crew.
  2. Give your three Scripture Readers their bookmarked verses (your scriptures or Gospel Library on your phone or tablet).
  3. Read each scene and pause for the readers and actions. If you brought a flashlight, switch it on at scene 7.
  4. After scene 4, say: “Remember the saints rising. Watch for it later.”
  5. After scene 9, ask: “Why would the Savior care so much about one missing prophecy?”

A no-talking challenge gets kids moving while they put the prophets in order.

4. Object lesson

Feast, Hold Fast, Treasure Up

Teams discover that the Lord asks for more than reading, and every invitation comes with a promise.

  1. Split into three teams, each with bookmarked scriptures: 2 Nephi 32:3 · 1 Nephi 15:23–24 · Doctrine and Covenants 84:85.
  2. Start the Big Timer for 60 seconds. Each team finds the Lord’s action word (feast · hold fast · treasure up) and the promise that goes with it.
  3. Each team acts out its action word with no talking while the others guess, then reads the promise aloud. A point for a correct guess, a point for a clear reading.
  4. Ask: “What’s the difference between reading and feasting? What would treasuring up a verse look like at your age?”

Kids learn the key verse and discover that Jesus answered temptation by quoting scripture He had treasured up.

  1. SAY“Jesus had fasted forty days. He was starving. Satan came three times, and all three times Jesus answered, ‘It is written.’” A Verse Leader reads Matthew 4:4 from your phone or tablet and teaches the motions.
  2. Footnote Hunt: in your scriptures or Gospel Library, a kid checks the footnote on Matthew 4:4. Where did Jesus’s answer come from? (Deuteronomy 8:3.) Bonus: 4:7 and 4:10 are from Deuteronomy too.

    About five years before Jesus was born, a Lamanite prophet named Samuel came to the Nephite city of Zarahemla. He preached for many days, calling the people to repent. They threw him out, and he started for home.

    🎬 Samuel walks toward the door. The Arrow Crew points: “Go home!”

  2. 🔄🧱 The Lord sends him back

    But the voice of the Lord told Samuel to go back and speak whatever came into his heart. When the people wouldn’t let him through the gate, he climbed up on the city wall and preached from there.

    🎬 The Wall lines up shoulder to shoulder. Samuel stands behind it with one arm raised. Scripture Reader 1 reads Helaman 13:3–4.

  3. ⭐🌙 A night with no darkness

    Samuel prophesied that in five years the Son of God would be born. The sign would be great lights in heaven: a day, a night and a day with no darkness at all, and a brand-new star.

  4. 🌑⛈️ Signs of His death too

    Samuel also prophesied signs of the Savior’s death: three days of darkness, thunder and earthquakes. And he said many saints would rise from their graves and appear to many people. Remember that last part. It’s going to matter.

  5. 🙋💧 Some believed and were baptized

    Some people believed Samuel. They went looking for Nephi so they could confess their sins, repent and be baptized.

    🎬 The Believers tiptoe across the room to Nephi, who shakes each one’s hand.

  6. 🏹🪨 Not one arrow hit him

    Others were furious. They threw stones and shot arrows at Samuel on the wall. But the Spirit of the Lord was with him, and not one hit him. When some of them saw that, they believed too.

    🎬 The Arrow Crew throws in super slow motion. Samuel dodges like a movie hero. Everyone: “Whiff!” Two Arrow Crew kids switch to Believers.

  7. 🌟🌃 Five years later: no darkness!

    Samuel escaped to his own land. Five years later, exactly as he said, the sun went down and it didn’t get dark. A new star rose. The next day, Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

    🎬 The Stars rise slowly with hands up, twinkling. Everyone looks up in wonder.

  8. 📜❓ The risen Savior checks the records

    Years later, the resurrected Jesus Christ visited the people in the Americas. He asked Nephi’s son, also named Nephi, to bring their records and reminded them that He had commanded Samuel to prophesy that saints would rise. Had it happened? Yes! Then He asked why it wasn’t written down.

    🎬 Nobody plays Jesus; you read His words. Nephi brings an invisible scroll and kneels. Scripture Reader 3 reads 3 Nephi 23:9–11.

  9. ✍️✅ Jesus commanded that it be written

    Nephi remembered that it had not been written. Jesus commanded that it be added, and it was. The Savior cared that His prophet’s words were recorded exactly. That’s how much the scriptures matter to Him.

Read the scriptures for 10 minutes every day this week. Pick one verse to treasure up and memorize it by Sunday (Matthew 4:4 is a great choice). Read or watch one message from the living prophet and tell your family one thing he taught. Want more? Make daily scripture study a Children and Youth goal.

Text the parents

Today in Primary we learned that Heavenly Father speaks through prophets and wants their words written down. We acted out Samuel the Lamanite preaching from the wall, and found out that the risen Savior Himself checked the Nephite records and had a missing prophecy added. We also learned how Jesus answered every temptation with “It is written.” Ask your child: what did Jesus notice was missing from the records, and what verse are you treasuring up this week?

🌽 The Great Page Rescue · 5 min

  1. Tell the true story of Mary and Caroline Rollins (Doctrine and Covenants Stories in Gospel Library): when a mob wrecked the press printing the Book of Commandments in Independence, Missouri, the two sisters gathered armfuls of pages and hid in a cornfield until the men gave up.
  2. Ask: “Those pages became part of the Doctrine and Covenants. What would you risk to protect the Lord’s words?”
  3. Compare with Samuel’s missing prophecy: “Both times, someone made sure God’s words weren’t lost.”

  1. Show a recent message from the living prophet or another apostle in the Gospel Library app.
  2. In pairs, kids find one warning and one promise in the message.
  3. Each pair reports like Samuel on the wall: “Warning! … Promise! …”

⚡ It Is Written Speed Round · 4 min

  1. Name an everyday temptation (a friend dares you to lie, you want to skip your prayers, someone shows you something you shouldn’t watch).
  2. Teams race to find a verse or a Primary song line that answers it, then stand and say, “It is written…” and share it.
  3. SAY“The more you treasure up now, the more you’ll have ready when you need it.”
