Know the chapters

Jeremiah was a prophet in Jerusalem for about 40 years, starting roughly 600 years before Jesus was born. He lived at the same time as Lehi, and some of his prophecies were on the brass plates Nephi brought from Jerusalem (1 Nephi 5:13). The people of Judah were worshipping idols and ignoring the poor, and Jeremiah warned them again and again that Babylon would destroy Jerusalem if they did not turn back to the Lord. Most people didn’t listen. In chapter 20 a priest named Pashur has him beaten and locked in the stocks overnight.

The star verse is Jeremiah 1:5: before Jeremiah was born, the Lord knew him and chose him to be a prophet. It teaches a truth that is precious to children. We lived with Heavenly Father as His spirit children before we came to earth, He knows each of us personally, and He sent us here with gifts and good work to do. Latter-day scripture teaches that many were chosen for important callings before they were born (Abraham 3:22–23; Alma 13:3). We still choose whether to follow Him.

Jeremiah’s first answer, “I am a child,” is a gift to an eight-year-old. The Lord didn’t tell him he was big enough. He said, “Be not afraid… for I am with thee.” Later the Lord sent Jeremiah to watch a potter whose pot was ruined on the wheel. Instead of throwing the clay away, the potter made it again (18:1–6). That is what Jesus Christ does when we repent: He doesn’t throw us away; He makes us new. Soft clay can be shaped, but dried-out clay cracks. A humble, willing heart is soft clay.

A few more pictures from these chapters: the Lord is “the fountain of living waters,” but His people dug “broken cisterns, that can hold no water” (2:13). They traded Him for things that leak away. The Lord promised to send “many fishers” and “hunters” to gather His scattered children (16:14–16). That promise is being fulfilled today through missionaries, temple and family history work, and every child who invites a friend. A person who trusts the Lord is like a tree planted by the river that stays green in a drought (17:7–8). And when Jeremiah felt like quitting, God’s word burned inside him “as a burning fire shut up in my bones” (20:9).

Read Jeremiah 1:4–8 and 2:13. Grab a paper cup, poke holes in it, and fill a water bottle. Let your phone or tablet carry the story drama, do Leaky Cup vs. the Fountain over a sink or bowl, then play Forehead Guess. Skip the name notes and Slow-Mo Fishers. Brought nothing? Before class

  1. Poke 5 holes in the bottom of one paper cup with a pencil. Fill a pitcher with water and set a big bowl on a towel near your chair.
  2. The night before, write each child’s name on the outside of a folded sticky note. Inside, write one good thing you’ve noticed about them: “You’re a brave friend.” “You make people laugh.” “You notice when someone is left out.”
  3. Before class, stick one note on each chair. Put your two chattiest kids’ notes far apart. You just made a seating chart nobody will argue with.
  4. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab so you can hand out story roles with one tap.
  5. Pick a spot for Slow-Mo Fishers: clear the middle of the room, or ask to use the hallway or cultural hall for four minutes.

If your class is wild

  • The name notes are your secret weapon. Kids sit where their name is, so seat your wildest kids right next to you.
  • Give Jeremiah to a kid who could use a win. Being the prophet who doesn’t give up is a great part for a child who is often in trouble.
  • Only the Water Helper pours during the leaky cup. Give that job to the kid who most wants to splash, and they’ll guard it like treasure.
  • Slow motion is the only speed in Slow-Mo Fishers. Anyone who runs goes back to the wall and counts to five in a slow-motion voice.
  • If energy spikes at any point, jump straight to Potter’s Freeze Dance, then come back to where you were.

1. Hook

Your Name Is Hiding!

A personal surprise grabs their attention and quietly sets your seating chart.

  1. Stand at the door as kids arrive. Say: “Don’t sit yet! Your name is hiding on one of these chairs. Tiptoe until you find it, sit down, and DON’T open it.”
  2. When everyone is sitting, count down: “3, 2, 1… open!” Everyone reads their note silently.
  3. Invite two or three volunteers to read theirs out loud. Cheer for each one.
  4. SAY“I wrote those last night. But Someone knew all about you way before last night. Way before you were even born. Who do you think it was?”
  5. Show Jeremiah 1:5 on your phone or tablet and read it. Say: “Heavenly Father knew you before you were born. Today we’ll meet a prophet who learned that, and it changed everything for him.”

Guess the Mystery Kid!

  1. Stand at the door as kids arrive. Say: “Sit anywhere, but sit on your hands. I’m about to describe someone in this room, and you have to guess who it is!”
  2. Pick a kid in your head (or tap Name Spinner with the screen turned toward you). Describe them without saying their name: “This person is a brave friend. This person notices when someone is left out.”
  3. On “3, 2, 1… point!” everyone points to who they think it is. The mystery kid stands up and takes a bow while everyone cheers. Do three or four kids and promise the rest a turn before class ends.
  4. SAY“I noticed those things about you. But Someone knew all about you way before today. Way before you were even born. Who do you think it was?”
  5. Show Jeremiah 1:5 on your phone or tablet and read it. Say: “Heavenly Father knew you before you were born. Today we’ll meet a prophet who learned that, and it changed everything for him.”

Story Drama: Jeremiah Won’t Quit

Acting out Jeremiah’s call, the potter and the fire in his bones lets wiggly kids move while the story sinks in.

  1. Hand out the roles (tap Roles in Teach Mode to assign them from your class list). Everyone left over is the People of Jerusalem.
  2. You read the Lord’s words yourself. Kids play Jeremiah, the people, the potter and the props.
  3. Read each scene aloud and pause for the action cue.
  4. At scene 3, have the whole class practice the brave line: “Be not afraid!”
  5. Slow way down for scene 9 and let the “fire” climb from toes to heads before the big WHOOSH.

Potter’s Freeze Dance

Kids become clay on the Potter’s wheel and burn off energy before sitting for the object lesson.

  1. SAY“You’re all clay on the Potter’s wheel!” Tap Freeze Dance.
  2. While the music plays, everyone spins slowly in place like clay on a wheel, arms tucked in, no bumping.
  3. When the music stops, call out a shape and everyone freezes as it: a bowl, a tall vase, a teapot, a tree by the river, an almond blossom, a fisher casting a net.
  4. Last round: “Oh no, the pot got lumpy!” Everyone melts to the floor, then pops up in their best brand-new shape.

4. Object lesson

Leaky Cup vs. the Fountain

A cup full of holes shows Jeremiah 2:13: only the Lord’s living water keeps us full.

  1. Set a big bowl on a towel. Hold up a paper cup with 5 pencil holes poked in the bottom. Say: “This is my super cup. Who wants a drink?”
  2. A helper pours water in. Everyone counts how many seconds it lasts. (Not long!)
  3. Read Jeremiah 2:13. Say: “A cistern was a hole dug in rock to save rainwater. Israel left the Lord, the fountain of living waters, and dug broken cisterns that couldn’t hold water.”
  4. Ask: “What are some ‘leaky cups’ that feel good for a minute but don’t last?” (Winning a video game, getting your own way, a new toy.) Let a kid pour water in for each one.
  5. Now pour from the pitcher into the good cup until it overflows into the bowl. Say: “Jesus is the fountain. His love and help never run out. When we pray, read and take the sacrament, He keeps filling us up.”
🌪️ Only the Water Helper touches the pitcher. Everyone else counts out loud, which keeps hands busy and mouths happy.

Human Leaky Cup vs. the Fountain

  1. Pick one kid to be the Leaky Cup. They hold both hands cupped together in front of them. Say: “This is my super cup. Who wants a drink?”
  2. Tap the splash sound on the Sound Board and “pour” pretend water into the cup. The cup slowly spreads its fingers apart while the whole class drips: “Drip… drip… drip!” Everyone counts how many seconds it lasts. (Not long!)
  3. Read Jeremiah 2:13. Say: “A cistern was a hole dug in rock to save rainwater. Israel left the Lord, the fountain of living waters, and dug broken cisterns that couldn’t hold water.”

A net that keeps growing shows that everyone gathered to Jesus becomes a gatherer too.

  1. Read Jeremiah 16:16: “Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them.” Say: “Missionaries are the Lord’s fishers. So are you!”
  2. Pick two kids to be the first fishers. They link elbows to make a net. Everyone else is a fish in the sea.
  3. The big rule: EVERYONE moves in slow motion. Slow-motion swimming, slow-motion fishing, slow-motion voices.
  4. When the net gently tags a fish, that fish links elbows and becomes part of the net. Keep going until every fish is gathered.
  5. SAY“Did you notice? Every fish that got caught became a fisher. When people come to Jesus, they help bring others too. That’s the gathering of Israel, and you’re part of it.”
  6. No floor space? Play from your seats: the net points to a fish and asks, “Will you come?” The fish says, “Yes!” and joins by holding hands down the row.
🌪️ Net tags are gentle taps only. Running means back to the wall to count to five in a slow-motion voice.

7. Game

Forehead Guess: Potter’s House Edition

A Heads Up–style guessing game reviews every person, picture and promise from today.

  1. Tap Forehead Guess. One kid holds your phone or tablet on their forehead, screen facing the class.
  2. Classmates give clues without saying the word. The hint under each word helps if they get stuck.
  3. Guesser tilts your phone or tablet down for “got it,” up to pass. Give each guesser 45 seconds, then pass your phone or tablet.
  4. Wiggly round: clue-givers can only act it out, no talking. Potters, fishers and almond trees are hilarious.

    Long ago in Jerusalem, the Lord spoke to a young man named Jeremiah. He said, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee.” Before Jeremiah was even a baby, Heavenly Father knew him, loved him, and had a job ready for him: to be a prophet!

    🎬 Jeremiah curls up tiny like a baby, then slowly stands up tall. Everyone whispers, “He knew him!”

  2. 😰🙋 “But I’m just a kid!”

    Jeremiah was scared. “Ah, Lord God!” he said. “I cannot speak: for I am a child.” He felt way too young and way too small for such a big job.

    🎬 Jeremiah’s knees wobble. Everyone shakes like jelly and squeaks, “Just a kid!”

  3. 👄💪 “Be not afraid … I am with thee”

    The Lord said, “Say not, I am a child.” He told Jeremiah to go wherever He sent him and not to be afraid, “for I am with thee.” Then the Lord touched Jeremiah’s mouth and said, “I have put my words in thy mouth.”

    🎬 Jeremiah touches his lips, then strikes a superhero pose. Everyone: “Be not afraid!”

  4. 🌿🌸 The almond branch wakes up

    The Lord asked, “Jeremiah, what seest thou?” He saw a branch from an almond tree. Almond trees are the first trees to wake up and bloom after winter. The Lord said He would hurry to make His words come true, just like that!

    🎬 Almond Tree stands still like a bare branch, then bursts into blossoms with wiggly fingers: “Pop, pop, pop!”

  5. 🏛️🙉 Jeremiah warns at the temple gate

    The Lord sent Jeremiah to stand at the gate of the temple and call out: “Stop worshipping idols! Be kind to the poor and to strangers! Obey the Lord, and He will be your God.” But many people didn’t want to hear it.

    🎬 Jeremiah cups his hands: “Come back to the Lord!” The people cover their ears: “La la la, not listening!”

  6. 🏺🔄 Down to the potter’s house

    Next the Lord sent Jeremiah to watch a potter spinning clay on his wheel. The pot got lumpy and ruined. Did the potter throw it away? No! He squished it back into a ball and made it again into a brand-new pot. The Lord said, “As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand.”

    🎬 The Potter spins the Clay slowly. The Clay gets a lumpy wobble, melts down low, then pops up in a new shape. Everyone: “Whirrrrr!”

  7. 🙌🟤 Soft clay can become anything

    The Lord wanted His people to be like soft clay: willing to listen and willing to change. If they would come back to Him, He could shape them into something beautiful again, no matter how lumpy they had become.

    🎬 Everyone becomes soft clay. The Potter calls out shapes: “A bowl! A tall vase! A teapot!” Everyone becomes each one.

  8. 😠🔒 Pashur locks Jeremiah in the stocks

    Not everyone liked Jeremiah’s message. A priest named Pashur got so angry that he had Jeremiah locked in the stocks, a heavy wooden frame that held him so he couldn’t move, all night long. Poor Jeremiah!

    🎬 Pashur points: “Lock him up!” Jeremiah freezes, stuck. Everyone: “CLUNK!”

  9. 🔥❤️ A fire shut up in his bones

    The next day Jeremiah was let go. He felt so sad that he said, “I’m done. I won’t talk about the Lord anymore.” But he couldn’t stop! God’s word felt like “a burning fire shut up in my bones.” He just had to share it.

    🎬 Everyone sits very still, then wiggles their fingers from toes to the top of their heads like flames rising: “WHOOSH!”

  10. 📣🏅 Jeremiah keeps going!

    So Jeremiah kept teaching for the rest of his life, even when it was hard. And the Lord kept His promise: He was with Jeremiah the whole way. He is with you too.

    🎬 Everyone stands tall like an iron pillar and says, “I will not be afraid!”

Heaven-Sent Gifts

Show your family the note from class. Ask them, “What good gifts do you think Heavenly Father gave me before I was born?” Then use one of those gifts to help someone this week.

Today in Primary we learned from Jeremiah 1:5 that Heavenly Father knew each of us before we were born. We acted out the potter’s house: when a pot gets ruined, the potter doesn’t throw it away; he makes it again. Jesus does that for us when we repent. We also watched a leaky cup drain and learned that Jesus is the fountain that never runs dry. Your child brought home a note about one of their gifts. Ask your child: what’s the difference between a leaky cup and a fountain?

🟤 Potter’s Do-Over · 4 min

  1. Give each child a small ball of play dough. They have 60 seconds to make a little pot.
  2. Poke a big dent in your own pot. Ask: “I messed up. Should I throw it away?” (No!) Squish it and make it again, like the potter in Jeremiah 18:4.
  3. SAY“When we repent, Jesus doesn’t throw us away. He helps us start over. That’s what the sacrament is for, every single week.”

🌳 The Tree by the River · 4 min

  1. The night before, stand a stalk of celery (with leaves) in a glass of water mixed with 15–20 drops of blue or red food coloring.
  2. In class, read Jeremiah 17:7–8: a person who trusts the Lord “shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river.”
  3. Show the celery. The color climbed all the way up into the leaves! Snap the stalk so kids can see the colored “straws” inside.
  4. SAY“Roots drink every day, not just once. When we pray, read scriptures and take the sacrament every week, we stay green even when life gets hot and hard.”

🎣 Magnet Fishing Missions · 5 min

  1. Cut 10 paper fish and slide a paper clip onto each one. Tie a string to a ruler and tape a small magnet to the end.
  2. On each fish, write a way to help someone come to Jesus: invite a friend to a Primary activity, sit by someone alone at lunch, write to a missionary, pray for a friend, tell someone a favorite story about Jesus, do family history with a grandparent, welcome a new kid.
  3. Spread the fish on a blue towel or blanket “sea.” Kids take turns fishing, read their fish, and act it out while the class guesses.
  4. SAY“The Lord said He would send many fishers. You can be one this week.”
