We Have Come to Worship Him

Christmas may be over, but this week the Christmas story keeps going! Shepherds, Simeon, Anna and the Wise Men all found baby Jesus and worshipped Him, and then Luke gives a peek at Jesus as a boy who grew in every way and loved His Father’s work. If your Nativity set is still out, this is its best week of the year.

Living-Room Nativity

🐑 Grab a blanket! Be a shepherd or angel!Act out the first Christmas.Hurry to find baby Jesus!

📖 Read together: Luke 2:1–16 ↗

  1. Open the story scenes and swipe through them together.
  2. Hand out parts: Mary, Joseph, shepherds (with a broom for a staff) and angels (with a blanket cape). Wrap a doll or a folded towel in a blanket to be baby Jesus.
  3. Read Luke 2:7–16 slowly while everyone acts it out. Angels whoosh in, shepherds jump up and hurry to the manger.
  4. When the shepherds find the baby, everyone kneels quietly for five seconds.
  5. SAY“The shepherds didn’t wait. They hurried to find Jesus. We can hurry to Jesus too.”

  • What would you have said if you saw baby Jesus?
🧸 Little ones (2–5)Your little one can be a sheep who crawls, says “baa” and follows the shepherds all the way to the manger.
📚 Big kids (10–13)Let your 10–13-year-old be the narrator who reads the verses and directs the actors.
🧑 Teens (14–18)Before the play, ask your teen to read Luke 2:4–12 and explain two details: Bethlehem means “house of bread,” and a manger is where animals eat. Then have them read John 6:35 and tell the family what those details might say about Jesus.
☕️ For grown-upsThe first announcement went to shepherds keeping watch at night, not to the temple leaders or to Herod’s court. Ask yourself what that says about the people God tends to reach first.

We Have Seen His Star

📖 Read together: Matthew 2:1–2, 9–11 ↗

  1. Open the key verse screen (Matthew 2:2, the same verse your kids learn in Primary) and read it together in your best wise-men voices.
  2. Do the motions from the screen, then say it again while you walk around the house following a “star” (a flashlight or anyone’s pointing finger).
  3. Play Star Echo: one person says a few words of the verse from another room, and everyone repeats it like a message traveling across the desert.
  4. SAY“The wise men traveled a long way to find Jesus. We can come to Him too, every day.”

🧑 Teens (14–18)Have your teen read Matthew 2:1–12 and find three different reactions to the news: the wise men searched, Herod plotted, and the chief priests knew the exact scripture (Matthew 2:5–6) but didn’t go. Ask which one is the easiest trap for someone who already knows the answers.
☕️ For grown-upsThe scribes could name the Messiah’s birthplace from memory and still didn’t make the short trip to Bethlehem. Knowing about Jesus and seeking Him are not the same thing, for adults any more than for kids.

  1. Read Luke 2:52 together. Say: “Jesus grew up in four ways. Let’s try all four!”
  2. Wisdom: each person opens a book and finds one new fact to share.
  3. Stature: measure each child against a door frame and mark it with a pencil and today’s date.
  4. Favor with God: everyone shares a favorite scripture story or says a short prayer.
  5. Favor with man: act out helping someone, like opening a door or sharing a toy.
  6. SAY“Jesus was once a kid like you, and He grew one day at a time. You’re growing like Him!”

  • What do you think Jesus was like when He was your age?
  • Which of the four ways do you want to grow this year?
🧸 Little ones (2–5)Let your little one stand against the door frame first, then flex their muscles and show how big they are getting.
📚 Big kids (10–13)Your 10–13-year-old can pick one of the four areas and choose a small weekly goal for it.
🧑 Teens (14–18)Hand your teen For the Strength of Youth: A Guide for Making Choices and let them pick one area of Luke 2:52 to set a real goal in, with a first step they will take this week.
☕️ For grown-upsLuke says Jesus “increased,” and Doctrine and Covenants 93:12–13 says He grew from grace to grace. If even the Son of God grew gradually, your kids (and you) are allowed to be works in progress.

Follow the Star

📖 Read together: Matthew 2:1–2, 9–11 ↗

  1. Read Matthew 2:9–11 about the Wise Men following the star to find Jesus.
  2. Cut a paper star and hide it somewhere in the house. Kids are the Wise Men searching for it while you call “brighter!” when they get close and “dimmer!” when they wander off.
  3. Whoever finds the star hides it next.
  4. Finish with Draw & Guess: take turns drawing a word from the story while everyone guesses.

  • The Wise Men traveled a long way to find Jesus. What helps us find Him today?

☕️ For grown-upsThe wise men set out with only part of the picture and had to stop in Jerusalem to ask for directions (Matthew 2:2). Revelation often works that way: enough light for the next part of the road.

  1. Read Matthew 2:11. The Wise Men brought gifts to Jesus.
  2. SAY“Jesus said that when we help others, it’s like helping Him. Let’s give Him secret gifts today!”
  3. Each child picks a secret gift of kindness: make a sibling’s bed, leave a nice note, set the table or share a treat.
  4. Do it without getting caught! At bedtime, everyone can guess who did what.

  • How did it feel to give a secret gift?
  • What gift can we give Jesus every day?
🧸 Little ones (2–5)Help your little one tiptoe in and leave a drawing on someone’s pillow.
📚 Big kids (10–13)Challenge your 10–13-year-old to do a secret gift for someone outside the family, like a neighbor or a friend at school.

  4. Get ready to go to church tomorrow: lay out clothes, find scriptures and put them by the door.

☕️ For grown-upsMary and Joseph searched for three days, and Mary said plainly that they had been sorrowing (Luke 2:48). They didn’t fully understand His answer (Luke 2:50), and Mary kept pondering (Luke 2:51). Raising a child with God’s help still includes worry and questions.

  1. After church, ask: “What did you learn in Primary today?” Let each child teach you one thing.
  2. Read Luke 2:28–30. Simeon waited his whole life to see Jesus, and when he held Him, he knew.
  3. SAY“A witness is someone who knows something is true and tells others. Simeon and Anna were witnesses of Jesus. We can be too.”
  4. Sit quietly for a moment. Then each person finishes this sentence: “I’m glad Jesus was born because…”

  • How do you know Jesus loves you?
  • Who could you tell about Jesus this week?
🧸 Little ones (2–5)Help your little one hold the doll you used on Monday gently, like Simeon held baby Jesus, and say “I love Jesus.”
📚 Big kids (10–13)Invite your 10–13-year-old to share a short testimony of Jesus Christ, like Simeon and Anna did.
🧑 Teens (14–18)Ask your teen to read Luke 2:25–38 and list the habits that put Simeon and Anna in the temple at exactly the right moment. Then ask what habits would help them recognize the Savior in their own life.
☕️ For grown-upsSimeon had a promise from the Holy Ghost (Luke 2:26), and Anna had served in the temple for years (Luke 2:37). They were there on the right day because they were there on all the ordinary days.

Family challenge

The Wise Men’s Gift Box

Put an empty box in the kitchen. Every time someone does a kind thing for someone else this week, they drop in a paper star. On Sunday, count the stars together: those are your family’s gifts to Jesus.

Parent Corner

The people who came to the infant Jesus could hardly have been more different: working shepherds, an elderly man waiting on a promise, a widow who lived at the temple, and learned travelers from the east. What they shared was not background but readiness. In the middle of these chapters is a quieter story for parents. When Herod turned murderous, Joseph had no army and no warning from the authorities; he had a dream, and he got up that same night and moved his family (Matthew 2:13–14). Later dreams guided him home and then to Nazareth (Matthew 2:19–23). The pattern still holds: parents are entitled to revelation for the children entrusted to them, and it usually comes to those who are listening and willing to act quickly.

  • Ponder: What dangers, physical or spiritual, feel closest to our children right now, and when did we last ask Heavenly Father specifically about them?
  • Try this: Before your personal prayer one night this week, write down one child’s name and one question about them. Listen, write down any impression that comes, and act on it the way Joseph did.
