Know the chapters

Ezekiel was a prophet who lived far from home in Babylon. The Lord told him, “I have made thee a watchman” (Ezekiel 3:17; see also 33:1–7). A watchman stood high on a city wall, looked far away, and blew a trumpet when he saw danger coming, so everyone could hurry to a safe place. Later chapters show the Lord as a shepherd who searches for His scattered sheep (Ezekiel 34:11–12) and a river flowing from the temple that brings life wherever it goes (Ezekiel 47:9).

For toddlers, keep one idea: the prophet helps keep me safe. They don’t need to understand prophets yet; they need to hear the word “prophet” next to a warm feeling and a picture. Today we have a living prophet, the President of the Church. Bring a current picture of him so the children can point to him.

Everything today is a game toddlers already love: peekaboo binoculars, a loud “Toot-toot!” and a silly hurry to a safe spot. Keep the “danger” vague and gentle (“Uh-oh, something’s coming!”). The lesson is six minutes; the play-time ideas add lost sheep, a wavy river and a sleepy sheepfold for the rest of nursery.

Only have 5 minutes?

Grab an empty paper-towel tube and a current picture of the prophet. Toot the tube like a trumpet, then peek through it: “I see you!” Swipe through the six-picture story on your phone or tablet, do the toot-toot wiggle, make hand binoculars while you say “The prophet helps me!” and end with “I know Jesus loves you.” For play time, pick three ideas below. Brought nothing? Tap “I brought nothing”: your hands become the trumpet and binoculars, and your phone or tablet shows the pictures.

What to bring7 items

Tick what you have. Forgot something? Every step that needs a supply has a no-supplies version in the plan below.

Before class

  1. Keep the paper-towel tube hidden in your bag until the hook.
  2. Open the Sound Board on your phone or tablet and find the trumpet button. Turn the volume low; a soft toot is fun, a loud one can startle.
  3. Walk the room and check the floor for anything small. Quick test: if it fits through a toilet-paper tube, it goes up high or away.
  4. Decide with the other adult who leads the lesson and who greets and comforts at the door. There are always two adults in nursery.
  5. Practice the motion: curl your hands into two circles and hold them up to your eyes like binoculars while you say “The prophet helps me!” That’s the whole key phrase.

If your class is wild

  • Tears at drop-off are normal. Let the other adult hold the crying child near the fun and say softly, “Daddy will come back. You’re safe here.” A quick, happy goodbye is easier than sneaking out.
  • When you “hurry to the safe place,” say “Tiptoe, tiptoe!” instead of “Run!” Toddlers who run in a small room bump heads.
  • The tube is for grown-up hands during the lesson. If a child wants it, make hand binoculars for them instead and give them a turn at play time.
  • Follow your ward’s policy for diapers and potty trips, and never leave one adult alone with the class or go off alone with one child.

1. Hook

Toot-Toot! I See You!

A surprise trumpet sound and a peekaboo spyglass pull scattered toddlers toward you and set up the watchman.

  1. Sit on the floor. Pull out the tube and toot through it: “Toot-toot!” Little ones will come to see.
  2. Hold the tube up to one eye and look around slowly. Say: “I’m looking… looking… I see Ella!”
  3. Find each child through the tube: “Peekaboo! I see you!”
  4. SAY“Today we learn about a watchman. He looked far away and helped people get safe.”
  5. Put the tube up high until play time.
🌪️ If they all want the tube, turn it into a turn-taking game later. Right now, show them how to make hand binoculars and look at you through them.

  1. Sit on the floor. Put a fist to your mouth and toot: “Toot-toot!” Little ones will come to see.
  2. Curl your hands into two circles and hold them to your eyes. Look around slowly: “I’m looking… looking… I see Ella!”
  3. Find each child through your hand binoculars: “Peekaboo! I see you!”
  4. SAY“Today we learn about a watchman. He looked far away and helped people get safe.”

2. Story

Picture Story: Ezekiel the Watchman

Six pictures with one sentence and one action each let toddlers look far, toot the trumpet and hurry to safety.

  1. Hold your phone or tablet up at their eye level. Everyone is a Watchman and a Trumpet Tooter.
  2. Read the one sentence, then do the action big so they can copy you. Don’t wait for everyone to join.
  3. Tap the trumpet button on the toot picture and toot along. Toddlers will want to toot again, so let them.
  4. If attention is gone early, jump to the last picture: “The prophet helps keep us safe!”
🌪️ Let a child who won’t stop moving tap your phone or tablet to change the picture (with your hand on it too). A job beats a battle.

3. Wiggle break

Toot-Toot Tiptoe

Toddlers need to move after two minutes, and a toot-and-hurry game repeats the story with their whole bodies.

  1. SAY“Stand up! Let’s be watchmen!”
  2. Stretch up on tiptoe with hand binoculars: “Look high!” Crouch down low: “Look low!”
  3. Toot together: “Toot-toot! Get safe!” Tiptoe in place fast, then crouch down small and hug: “Safe!”
  4. Pop back up and do it again while they giggle.
  5. End with binoculars: “The prophet helps me!” and sit down together.

Our Little Verse: Ezekiel 3:17

Four kid words and one motion, said many times, is how a toddler carries a scripture home.

  1. Hold up your scriptures. Say: “This is the Bible. It tells about prophets.”
  2. Read slowly: “I have made thee a watchman.” Say: “Heavenly Father made Ezekiel a watchman. The prophet helps me!”
  3. Make hand binoculars and say it together three times: a tiny whisper, a regular voice, a happy voice.
  4. Look at each child through your binoculars and say, “The prophet helps Ella.”

Our Prophet and Jesus

Seeing the prophet’s face next to the Savior’s helps toddlers connect the word “prophet” with love and safety.

  1. Lower your voice to a whisper. Hold up the picture of the prophet. Say: “This is our prophet. He teaches us about Jesus.”
  2. Hold up the picture of Jesus Christ. Say: “This is Jesus.” Let children point or gently pat the pictures.
  3. SAY“I know Jesus loves you. The prophet helps keep you safe.”
  4. If your nursery has a prayer now, fold arms together while a grown-up says a short one.

  1. Lower your voice to a whisper. Put your hand on your heart and say: “Shhh. Let’s think about Jesus.”
  2. SAY“Jesus gives us a prophet. The prophet teaches us about Jesus.”
  3. Whisper “Jesus loves you” as you touch each child’s hand or wave to them. Say: “I know Jesus loves you.”
  4. If your nursery has a prayer now, fold arms together while a grown-up says a short one.

Show your little one a picture of the prophet this week (a Friend magazine or the Gospel Library app works). Make hand binoculars together and say, “The prophet helps me!”

Today in nursery we learned that the prophet Ezekiel was like a watchman who looked far away and tooted a trumpet to help people get safe (Ezekiel 3:17). We made hand binoculars, tooted, tiptoed to a safe place and said, “The prophet helps me!” Try it at home: show your child a picture of the prophet and see if they make binoculars with you.

Nursery play time

The lesson is short on purpose. Fill the rest of nursery with these: pick what fits your little ones today.

🐑 Find the Little Lost Sheep · 10 min

  1. While children play with the nursery toys, tuck 3–5 stuffed animals around the room where they’re easy to spot: behind a chair leg, under a table, on a low shelf.
  2. SAY“Baa! Baa! A little sheep is lost! Can you find it?” Walk around with children and look.
  3. When someone finds one, cheer: “You found it!” Hug it and bring it to the blanket “sheepfold.”
  4. SAY“The Lord looks for His sheep until He finds them (Ezekiel 34:11). He loves His sheep, and He loves you!”
  5. Hide them again whenever children want another turn. No stuffed animals? Hide yourself behind a chair and baa softly, or play “Where’s Ella?” and find each child.

🎵 Watchman Music and March · 5 min

  1. Stand up and sing “Follow the Prophet” (Children’s Songbook, 110) while you march or stomp around the room in a wobbly little line.
  2. Sing “Do As I’m Doing” (Children’s Songbook, 276). Lead binoculars, toot-toot, tiptoe and a crouch-down “Safe!” and let them copy.
  3. Tap Freeze Dance on your phone or tablet. When the music stops, everyone makes binoculars: “The prophet helps me!”
  4. Don’t know a tune? Play it once in the Gospel Library app, or just chant “Toot-toot, tiptoe” while you march.

🥕 Good Pasture Snack · 10 min

  1. Check allergies and your ward’s snack policy first. Wipe every child’s hands, and yours, before snack.
  2. Everyone sits to eat, with an adult watching. Skip choking foods for this age: no popcorn, nuts, whole grapes, hard candy or chunks of raw carrot.
  3. Fold arms. A grown-up says a short blessing: “Thank you for our snack.”
  4. Talk while they munch. Say: “Sheep eat grass. Munch, munch! Baa!” Say: “The Lord said He will feed His sheep in a good pasture (Ezekiel 34:14). He takes care of us too.”
  5. No snack today? Be hungry little sheep: crawl to the “grass” (the carpet), pretend to munch, baa, and say thank you to Heavenly Father.

🖍️ Wiggly River Art · 8 min

  1. Tape a long strip of paper to the table or floor. Draw a wiggly blue line down the middle: “This is a river.”
  2. Give each child one chunky washable crayon. Every scribble is a tree, a fish or more river! Say: “Everything the river touches comes alive (Ezekiel 47:9).”
  3. Write each child’s name by their scribbles and hang the river by the door for parents to see.
  4. Safety: chunky crayons only. Skip stickers, glitter, pom-poms and marker caps (small parts). Count the crayons back into the box.
  5. No paper or crayons? Open Draw & Guess on your phone or tablet and help each child finger-draw a wiggly river while you hold your phone or tablet.

🧶 Fluffy Sheep Feelies · 6 min

  1. Set out a basket of big fluffy things: a fleece blanket, a soft sweater, a stuffed lamb. Let children dig in and touch.
  2. SAY“Soft like a sheep! Baa!” Rub the fleece gently on your cheek, and on a child’s hand if they like it.
  3. SAY“The Lord is like a shepherd. He takes good care of His sheep, and He takes care of you.”
  4. Safety: big items only. No cotton balls, pom-poms or yarn pieces (choking hazards). An adult sits with the basket the whole time.
  5. No basket? Pat soft sleeves and hair gently (only if children like it) and say, “Soft like a sheep! Baa!”

🌊 Blanket River Waves · 5 min

  1. Two grown-ups hold the edges of a light blanket or sheet low, near the floor, and gently ripple it: “Here comes the river!”
  2. Let children touch the waves, pat them and giggle. Make big slow waves and tiny fast waves.
  3. Tuck a stuffed animal on top and let it “swim” down the river: “Everything the river touches comes alive!”
  4. Safety: keep the blanket low and let it go if a child pulls it. Never cover a child’s face, and fold it away when you’re done.
  5. No blanket? Everyone lies on their tummies and makes swimming arms and wiggly fish tails: “Swim, swim!”

🔭 Watchman Window Walk · 5 min

  1. Give a child a turn with the paper-towel tube spyglass, or make hand binoculars together.
  2. Walk to the window together and look: “What do you see? A tree? A car? The sky?” Name everything they point at.
  3. Walk past any pictures on the nursery walls and name them. Say: “Watchmen look far away.”
  4. Finish at the pictures of the prophet and Jesus: “The prophet helps me! Jesus loves me!”
  5. Stay in the nursery room with both adults. Picture walks are for whoever wants to come; let others keep playing.

😴 Sleepy Sheep in the Fold · 4 min

  1. Spread out a blanket and say: “This is the sheepfold, the sheep’s safe bed.” Children may lie down, sit or climb into a lap. Nobody has to.
  2. Baa very softly, then whisper: “Sleepy sheep… shhh.”
  3. Hum “I Am a Child of God” (Children’s Songbook, 2) softly and pat backs gently, only for children who like it.
  4. Whisper each child’s name: “The Lord loves His little sheep. He loves you, Ella.”
  5. Upset child? Hold them, rock side to side and walk to the window together. Calm comes before learning.

👋 Toot-Toot Tidy-Up Goodbye · 5 min

  1. Five minutes before the end, tap trumpet on the Sound Board: “Toot-toot! Time to get the toys safe!” Put the toys in their bins together.
  2. Sit together one more time. Make binoculars: “The prophet helps me!”
  3. Hand each child only to their own parent or guardian, as your ward’s policy says. Toot goodbye: “Toot-toot! See you next week!”
  4. Share the family note from the app with parents and tell them one happy moment about their child.
  5. Kids still waiting? Keep them busy with Find the Little Lost Sheep or a picture book. Both adults stay until every child is picked up.
