Know the chapters

Isaiah 40–49 is full of comfort. Isaiah wrote to Israelites who would one day be carried far from home and would wonder if God had forgotten them (Isaiah 49:14). The Lord answers tenderly: a mother might forget her nursing baby, “yet will I not forget thee” (49:15). He calls His people by name (43:1) and gathers the lambs in His arm like a shepherd (40:11). The Lord speaking in these chapters is Jehovah, who is Jesus Christ.

For toddlers, the whole lesson is one feeling: Jesus remembers me. That is exactly the worry of a little one who just watched Mom or Dad walk out the door. Every time a parent comes back at pickup, you get to say, “Mommy remembered you! Jesus will never forget you either.” Use each child’s name as often as you can today; hearing their own name is how toddlers feel known.

Don’t expect sitting, sharing or answers. Everyone is a little lamb: baa, crawl, munch grass, flop down sleepy and get a hug. The lesson is six minutes. The play-time ideas below keep saying “Jesus remembers you” for the rest of nursery, through play, snack, songs and goodbyes.

Hide a stuffed lamb under a towel and play peekaboo, swipe through the six-picture story on your phone or tablet, crawl and baa like lambs, give yourselves a big hug while you say “Jesus remembers me!” and end with a picture of Jesus and “I know Jesus loves you.” For play time, pick three ideas below. Brought nothing? Tap “I brought nothing”: you become the peekaboo, and your phone or tablet shows the pictures.

Before class

  1. Tuck the lamb under the towel in your bag so it’s ready for peekaboo.
  2. Learn every child’s name before class, or ask parents at the door. Names are the heart of today.
  3. Sweep the floor with your eyes and hands for anything small. If it fits through a toilet-paper tube, it’s a choking hazard and goes up high or away.
  4. Decide with the other adult who leads the lesson and who greets and comforts at the door. There are always two adults in nursery.
  5. Practice the big hug and say “Jesus remembers me!” a few times. That’s the whole key phrase.

If your class is wild

  • Tears at drop-off are normal. Let the other adult hold the crying child near the fun and whisper, “Mommy will come back. She remembers you.” A quick, happy goodbye from the parent is easier than sneaking out.
  • Toddlers love to be lambs on all fours. Clear a crawling space and keep it free of toys so nobody bumps a knee or a head.
  • If a child won’t let go of the lamb, let them hold it for the whole story. A child holding Little Lamb is a child who is listening.
  • Follow your ward’s policy for diapers and potty trips, and never leave one adult alone with the class or go off alone with one child.

1. Hook

Peekaboo, Little Lamb!

Peekaboo pulls scattered toddlers toward you and quietly shows that someone who loves you remembers right where you are.

  1. Sit on the floor with the towel on your lap and Little Lamb hiding underneath.
  2. SAY“Baa! Who’s that? Something is hiding!” Baa together.
  3. Lift the towel slowly… “Peekaboo! It’s Little Lamb!”
  4. Hide Lamb again and pull the towel off two or three more times. Say: “I didn’t forget Little Lamb! I remembered!”
  5. SAY“Today we learn Jesus remembers you!”
🌪️ If they grab for Lamb, hand Lamb to the grabbiest child to hold and play peekaboo with the towel over your own face instead.

  1. Sit on the floor. Cover your eyes with your hands and say: “Baa! Where’s Mia? Where did Mia go?”
  2. Open your hands wide: “Peekaboo! There you are!” Do it for each child by name.
  3. SAY“I didn’t forget you! I remembered your name!”
  4. SAY“Today we learn Jesus remembers you!”

2. Story

Picture Story: Jesus’s Little Lambs

Six pictures with one sentence and one action each let toddlers be lambs who get picked up and held, and hear that Jesus remembers them.

  1. Hold your phone or tablet up at their eye level. Say: “Everybody is a little lamb! Baa!”
  2. Read the one sentence, then do the action big so they can copy you. Don’t wait for everyone to join; the joiners will come.
  3. On the hug picture, hug Little Lamb (or yourself) and say, “Held close!”
  4. If attention is gone before the end, jump to the last picture and say every child’s name.
🌪️ Let a child who won’t stop moving tap your phone or tablet to change the picture (with your hand on it too). A job beats a battle.

3. Wiggle break

Baa, Hop, Flop!

Toddlers need to move after two minutes of anything, and lamb moves repeat the story with their whole bodies.

  1. SAY“Little lambs, let’s play!”
  2. Crawl on hands and knees: “Baa, baa!” Then munch pretend grass: “Munch, munch!”
  3. Stand up and hop like happy lambs: “Hop, hop, hop!”
  4. Flop down sleepy: “Night-night, lambs.” Pause, then pop up: “Good morning! Baa!” Do it again while they giggle.
  5. End with a big hug: “Jesus remembers me!” and sit down together.

Our Little Verse: Isaiah 49:15

Three words and one big hug, said many times, is how a toddler carries a scripture home.

  1. Hold up your scriptures. Say: “This is the Bible. It tells about Jesus.”
  2. Read slowly: “yet will I not forget thee.” Say: “That means Jesus will never forget you!”
  3. Give yourself a big hug and say it together: “Jesus remembers me!” Say it three times: a tiny whisper, a regular voice, a happy voice.
  4. Kneel by each child, wrap your arms around yourself, and say, “Jesus remembers Noah.”

  1. Lower your voice to a whisper. Hold up the picture of Jesus Christ. Say: “This is Jesus.”
  2. Let each child look closely, point or gently pat the picture.

  4. If your nursery has a prayer now, fold arms together while a grown-up says a short one.

  1. Lower your voice to a whisper. Put your hand on your heart and say: “Let’s think about Jesus.”
  2. Whisper each child’s name as you touch their hand or wave: “Jesus loves you, Mia.”
  3. SAY“I know Jesus loves you. He will never forget you.”
  4. If your nursery has a prayer now, fold arms together while a grown-up says a short one.

  1. SAY“Let’s rock our babies.” Rock your arms slowly side to side.

  3. At the end, whisper: “Mommy remembers her baby. Jesus remembers you!” and give a big hug.

Play peekaboo with your little one this week. Each time you pop out, say “I remember you!” then give a big hug and say “Jesus remembers you too!”

Today in nursery we learned from Isaiah that Jesus will never forget us (Isaiah 49:15). We were little lambs who crawled, said “baa” and got picked up and held close, and we gave ourselves a big hug while we said, “Jesus remembers me!” Try it at home: say “Jesus remembers you!” and hug, especially at goodbyes, drop-offs and bedtime.

Nursery play time

The lesson is short on purpose. Fill the rest of nursery with these: pick what fits your little ones today.

🐑 Where’s Little Lamb? · 10 min

  1. Set out the nursery’s toys and let children play however they like.
  2. Every few minutes, hide Little Lamb somewhere easy to see: half under a pillow or peeking out of a toy bin. Say: “Baa! Where’s Little Lamb?”
  3. Help them look. When someone finds Lamb, cheer: “You found Little Lamb! Jesus never loses His lambs. He remembers you!”
  4. Give Lamb a hug together, then hide it again.
  5. No stuffed lamb? Hide any soft toy, or play peekaboo behind a chair: “Where’s Mia? There you are!”

🎵 Little Lambs March · 5 min

  1. Sing “Do As I’m Doing” (Children’s Songbook, 276). Lead lamb moves and let them copy: crawl, baa, munch grass, hop, flop down sleepy.
  2. March around the room in a lamb parade. Say: “Baa! Follow me, little lambs!” Stop and hug: “Jesus remembers me!”
  3. Tap Freeze Dance on your phone or tablet. When the music stops, everyone freezes in a big hug.
  4. Don’t know a tune? Play it once in the Gospel Library app, or just chant “Baa, baa, little lamb” while you march.

⚽ Name Roll · 5 min

  1. Sit on the floor with legs apart, facing a child or two. Gently roll the big soft ball to one child.
  2. Say their name as the ball rolls: “Here comes the ball to Eli! Jesus knows Eli’s name!”
  3. Cheer for any kind of roll back: pushed, thrown, carried over or kept. Toddlers aren’t ready to take turns yet, and that’s fine.
  4. Keep saying names over and over. Say: “Isaiah said Jesus calls us by name” (Isaiah 43:1).
  5. No ball? Play Name Wave: wave at each child and sing their name in a silly voice: “Hello, Eli! Jesus knows you!”

🍎 Lambs Get Snack Too · 10 min

  1. Check allergies and your ward’s snack policy first. Wipe every child’s hands, and yours, before snack.
  2. Everyone sits to eat, with an adult watching. Skip choking foods for this age: no popcorn, nuts, whole grapes, hard candy or chunks of raw carrot.
  3. Fold arms. A grown-up says a short blessing: “Thank you for our snack.”
  4. Talk while they munch. Say: “Lambs get hungry. The shepherd gives them food. Munch, munch!” Say: “Isaiah said Jesus takes care of His lambs” (Isaiah 40:11).
  5. Say each child’s name as you hand them a snack: “Here’s one for Mia. I remembered you!”
  6. No snack today? Have a pretend lamb picnic: munch pretend grass, say “baa,” and say thank you to Heavenly Father.

✋ Hearts on Our Hands · 8 min

  1. Tape a big sheet of paper to the table or floor. Trace each child’s hand with a crayon (they’ll wiggle; any shape is fine).
  2. Draw a small heart in the middle of each hand and write the child’s name. Say: “Isaiah said Jesus keeps us close, like names written on His hands” (Isaiah 49:16).
  3. Give each child one chunky washable crayon to scribble around their hand. Say: “Jesus remembers you!”
  4. Safety: chunky crayons only. Skip stickers, glitter, pom-poms and marker caps (small parts). Count the crayons back into the box.
  5. No paper or crayons? Gently trace a heart on each child’s palm with your finger (only if they like it) and say, “Jesus remembers you!”

🧶 Soft Like a Lamb · 5 min

  1. Set out the basket of big soft things: a fleece blanket, a big stuffed animal, a knit hat, a pillow. Everything must be bigger than a child’s fist.
  2. Let children pull things out, squeeze and cuddle them. Rub the blanket on your cheek: “Soft! Soft like a little lamb.”
  3. Wrap Little Lamb in the blanket and rock it: “Lambs are held close. Jesus remembers His lambs.”
  4. Safety: an adult sits with the basket the whole time. No yarn, strings or buttons that could come loose.
  5. No basket? Feel soft things you already have: a sweater sleeve, a carpet, a cheek. Say “Soft!” each time.

🖼️ Mommy Animals, Baby Animals · 5 min

  1. Sit on the floor with a child or two in your lap. Open a picture book of animals, or swipe back through today’s story pictures on your phone or tablet.
  2. Point and name: “A mommy sheep and her baby lamb! Baa!” Ask: “Where’s the baby?” and let them point.
  3. SAY“Mommies remember their babies. Jesus remembers you!” and give a hug.
  4. Finish at a picture of Jesus Christ. Say: “Jesus knows your name.”
  5. Picture walks are for whoever wants to come. If a child drifts off, let them go.

😴 Sleepy Lambs · 4 min

  1. SAY“Little lambs are sleepy. Time to rest.” Children may lie down, sit or climb into a lap. Nobody has to.
  2. Tap heartbeat on the Sound Board with the volume low. Say: “Shh… a lamb held close hears a heartbeat.”
  3. Hum “I Feel My Savior’s Love” (Children’s Songbook, 74) softly and pat backs gently.
  4. Whisper each child’s name: “Jesus remembers you, Noah.”
  5. Upset child? Hold them, rock side to side and walk to the window together. Calm comes before learning.

👋 “You Came Back!” Goodbye · 5 min

  1. Five minutes before the end, say: “Little lambs, time to put toys to bed!” Baa while you put toys in their bins together.
  2. Sit together one more time. Give a big hug: “Jesus remembers me!”
  3. When each parent comes, cheer: “Look! Mommy came back! She remembered you! Jesus will never forget you either.”
  4. Hand each child only to their own parent or guardian, as your ward’s policy says. Share today’s family note from the app and one happy moment about their child.
  5. Kids still waiting? Play Where’s Little Lamb? again. Both adults stay until every child is picked up.
