🤔 Forehead Guess🏆 Showdown
💡 The big idea

Like Daniel and his friends, I can choose the right even when nobody else does, and Heavenly Father and Jesus will be with me.

I can stand for the right when it’s hard, and trust that God is with me no matter what.

Know the chapters

About 600 years before Jesus was born, the armies of Babylon conquered Jerusalem and carried off many young Israelites, including Daniel and three friends whom the Babylonians renamed Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego (Daniel 1:1–7). They lived in the palace of the most powerful king on earth, surrounded by people who did not worship the true God. Again and again they stayed true: they turned down the king’s food (Daniel 1), refused to bow to a golden statue (Daniel 3), and Daniel kept praying when it was against the law (Daniel 6). Each time, God blessed them in amazing ways.

Daniel 1 opens a great conversation about the Word of Wisdom. The king’s food probably broke the food laws God had given Israel (and may have been offered to idols), so Daniel asked for “pulse” (vegetables, beans and seeds) and water. After a 10-day test, the four friends looked healthier than everyone else, and God gave them knowledge and wisdom (Daniel 1:15–17, 20). Those blessings sound a lot like the promises in Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21: health, wisdom, hidden treasures of knowledge, and strength to run without getting tired.

In Daniel 2, God showed Daniel the king’s forgotten dream after Daniel and his friends prayed for help (2:16–19). The great statue of gold, silver, brass, iron and clay stood for the kingdoms of the world. The stone “cut out without hands” (made by God, not by people) smashes the statue and grows into a mountain that fills the whole earth (2:34–35, 44–45). Latter-day prophets teach that this stone is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, God’s kingdom on the earth, which will never be destroyed (see also Doctrine and Covenants 65:2).

Daniel 3 holds one of the bravest lines in scripture: “But if not.” Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego knew God could save them, but they decided ahead of time to obey Him even if He didn’t. For eight-year-olds, that’s the heart of this lesson: we choose the right because we love Heavenly Father, not just to get a reward. The king saw a fourth person in the fire “like the Son of God” and later said God had sent His angel (3:25, 28). The Lord doesn’t always take the fire away, but He promises to be with us in it (Isaiah 43:2). Daniel 7:13–14 also looks ahead to “the Son of man,” a title Jesus later used for Himself.

Only have 5 minutes?

Read Daniel 3. It’s one exciting page. Grab a flashlight for the fourth person in the fire. Run the Story Drama in Teach Mode, play Lions’ Den Freeze Dance, and finish with Forehead Guess. Skip the box statue if you’re short on time. No flashlight? Tap “I brought nothing” and the glowing phone or tablet becomes the fourth person in the fire.

What to bring8 items

Tick what you have. Forgot something? Every step that needs a supply has a no-supplies version in the plan below.

Before class

  1. Make two signs, “👑 King’s Feast” and “🫘 Beans & Water,” and tape them on opposite walls.
  2. Build the dream statue from 5 boxes. Wrap or color them: yellow (gold head), foil (silver chest and arms), brown or orange (brass belly), gray (iron legs), and half gray, half brown (feet of iron and clay). Stack them so they wobble a little.
  3. Lay down a red towel or tape a square on the floor for the fiery furnace. Hide the flashlight near it.
  4. Tear 10 strips of masking tape and stick them on the edge of the table, ready for the growing stone.
  5. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab so you can hand out story parts with one tap.

If your class is wild

  • Give King Nebuchadnezzar to a kid who loves being loud: stomping is part of the job. Give the Golden Statue to a kid who likes a challenge: “Can you freeze through three whole scenes?”
  • The drama’s music is your control switch. When the band stops, everyone freezes. Practice it once before you start.
  • Keep the fire fun, not scary. It’s a sound-effects crew, and say early and often: God kept the friends safe.
  • Use the stone as your reward: only kids who are sitting ready get to roll it or wrap it.
  • If they come in bouncing, start with Lions’ Den Freeze Dance, then go back to the hook.

Bonus steps are for when you have extra time. Steps that mention Teach Mode, the Sound Board or other class games refer to the Gospel Sparks app; on the web you can play Forehead Guess and Scripture Showdown from this page.

1. Hook

King’s Feast or Beans?

2 min

Moving to pick a side burns energy and sets up Daniel’s first brave choice.

  1. Kids start in the middle of the room. Say: “Pick a side! Walk, don’t run, to the sign you choose.” Warm up with one silly one: pizza or tacos?
  2. Then point to the signs: “The most powerful king on earth invites you to eat his fancy feast every day. OR you can eat beans and drink water. Pick!”
  3. Laugh with the feast crowd, then add: “Oh, one more thing. God asked you not to eat the king’s food. And everybody else in the palace is eating it.” Let kids switch sides if they want.
  4. SAY“That was a real choice for a young man named Daniel about 2,600 years ago. He and his three friends chose beans and water, and asked for a 10-day test. Count with me!” Count 1 to 10 on your fingers and flex your muscles on 10.
  5. SAY“After ten days, they were healthier than everyone who ate the king’s food, and God gave them extra wisdom (Daniel 1:15–17). Today God gives us a law for our bodies too, the Word of Wisdom. Now let’s meet three friends who had an even hotter choice to make…”
🌪️ Anyone who runs to a side goes back to the middle and counts to five before choosing again.

Story Drama: The Three Who Would Not Bow

6 min

Every kid gets a part in the most exciting rescue story of the year.

  1. Hand out the roles (tap Roles in Teach Mode to assign them from your class list). Everyone without a role is in the Royal Band & Fire Crew.
  2. Practice the switch once: when the Band plays, everyone bows (except the three friends). When you raise your hand, the music stops and everyone freezes.
  3. Read each scene aloud and pause for the action cue.
  4. At scene 5, practice the big line together: “But if not… we still won’t bow!”
  5. At scene 7, click on the flashlight inside the furnace for the fourth person.
🌪️ If an actor gets silly, give them the next sound effect so their energy has a job.

3. Wiggle break

Lions’ Den Freeze Dance

2 min

Daniel 6 becomes a wiggle break that practices instant self-control.

  1. Tell it fast: “Years later, when Daniel was an old man, jealous leaders tricked King Darius into making a law: for 30 days, nobody could pray to anyone except the king. Daniel went home, opened his windows, knelt down and prayed three times a day, just like always.”
  2. “So they threw Daniel into a den of lions. But God sent an angel and shut the lions’ mouths. In the morning, Daniel didn’t have a scratch!” (Daniel 6:22–23)
  3. Now everyone is a lion. Tap Freeze Dance. While the music plays, prowl on tiptoe, swish your tail, and do SILENT roars: big mouth, no sound.
  4. When the music stops, shout “Angel!” Every lion shuts its mouth, covers it with both paws and freezes.
  5. Last round: when the music stops, the lions lie down and go to sleep. Ask: “Why wasn’t Daniel hurt?” (He trusted God, and God sent His angel.)
🌪️ Silent roars are your secret weapon: all the energy, none of the noise. If it gets loud, stop the music and whisper, “The angel is coming…”

The Stone That Smashed the Statue

4 min

A crash and a growing ball show that God’s kingdom, the Church, can’t be stopped.

  1. Stand the box statue on the floor. Say: “King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that scared him. He told his wise men, ‘Tell me what I dreamed AND what it means!’ Nobody could. So Daniel and his friends prayed, and God showed Daniel the dream.”
  2. Point to each box: gold head, silver chest, brass belly, iron legs, and wobbly feet of iron mixed with clay. Say: “These stood for the kingdoms of the world, one after another.”
  3. SAY“Then a stone was cut out of a mountain ‘without hands.’ That means God made it, not people. Watch what it does!” Let a child who is sitting ready roll the ball at the feet. CRASH!
  4. SAY“Then the stone grew into a great mountain and filled the whole earth!” Pass the ball around. Each child wraps a sheet of paper around it (with a strip of tape) while naming something in Jesus Christ’s Church today: prophets, temples, missionaries, baptism, the sacrament, Primary. Watch it grow!
  5. SAY“Daniel said God would set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed (Daniel 2:44). That kingdom is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It started in 1830 with just six members. Now it has millions of members all over the world. When you were baptized, you became part of the stone!”
🌪️ Only the child holding the stone may touch the statue. Everyone else stays on their bottoms to shout the countdown: “3… 2… 1… CRASH!”

Human Statue and the Growing Stone

  1. SAY“King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that scared him. He told his wise men, ‘Tell me what I dreamed AND what it means!’ Nobody could. So Daniel and his friends prayed, and God showed Daniel the dream.”
  2. Pick five kids to be the statue, standing in a row: gold head (hands make a crown), silver chest (arms crossed), brass belly (hands on tummy), iron legs (stiff robot legs) and wobbly feet of iron and clay (wobble like jelly). Say: “These stood for the kingdoms of the world, one after another.”
  3. Pick a stone who curls up small on the floor. Say: “Then a stone was cut out of a mountain ‘without hands.’ That means God made it, not people. Watch what it does!”
  4. Everyone shouts, “3… 2… 1…” The stone crawls to the wobbly feet and stops without touching. Tap the crash sound on the Sound Board, and the whole statue topples to the floor in slow motion.
  5. SAY“Then the stone grew into a great mountain and filled the whole earth!” Go around: each child names something in Jesus Christ’s Church today (prophets, temples, missionaries, baptism, the sacrament, Primary) and curls up next to the stone. • What could you say if a friend wants you to watch a show or play a game your parents said no to?
  • The three friends said, “But if not.” What does it mean to keep trusting God even when things don’t turn out the way you hoped?
  • Daniel prayed three times a day. When are good times in your day to pray?

Scenes

  1. 👑🗿✨ The king builds a giant gold statue

Long ago in the city of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar built a huge statue covered in gold. It was about 90 feet tall. That’s like fifteen dads standing on each other’s shoulders! It sparkled so bright in the sun that people had to squint.

🎬 The Golden Statue stands on tiptoe with arms stretched high. Everyone squints: “Ooooh, shiny!”

  2. 📯🎶 “When the music plays, bow down!”

The king’s Herald shouted a new law to the whole crowd: “When you hear the horns, flutes, harps and every kind of music, fall down and worship the golden statue! Anyone who doesn’t will be thrown into a burning fiery furnace!”

🎬 The Herald shouts the law. The Royal Band warms up: toot your horn, strum your harp, and play the funny-sounding sackbut!

  3. 🙇🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️ Everyone bows… except three

The music started, and thousands of people fell flat on their faces. But three young men stayed standing tall: Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. They loved God, and they would worship only Him.

🎬 The Band plays! Everyone bows low… except Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, who fold their arms and stand tall.

  4. 😡👑 The king is furious!

The Tattletales ran to the king. Nebuchadnezzar turned red with anger! He gave the three friends one more chance: “Bow down when the music plays, or into the furnace you go. And what god could save you from my hands?”

🎬 Tattletales point: “They didn’t bow!” The King stomps three times. Everyone: “Ooooh…”

  5. 🙌✨ “Our God is able… but if not!”

The three friends didn’t even need to think about it. They told the king their God was able to save them from the furnace. “But if not,” they would still never bow to his statue. That is real faith: trusting God no matter what happens.

🎬 The three friends say together, “Our God is able!” Everyone else answers, “But if not… we still won’t bow!”

  6. 🔥🔥🔥 Seven times hotter!

The king was so angry that he ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than ever! His strongest guards tied up the three friends, still wearing their coats and hats, and threw them into the roaring flames.

🎬 Fire Crew: rub your hands fast and crackle, “Shhhhh!” Guards slowly walk the three friends into the furnace spot.

  7. 👀4️⃣ Wait… FOUR people in the fire?

The king leaned in to look, then jumped up in shock. “Didn’t we throw in THREE men? I see FOUR men walking around in the fire, not tied up and not hurt! And the fourth one looks like the Son of God!”

🎬 Teacher clicks on the flashlight in the furnace. The King rubs his eyes and counts: “One… two… three… FOUR?!”

  8. 👃🚫💨 Not even a smell of smoke!

“Come out!” the king called. Out walked Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. Everyone crowded around to check. Their hair wasn’t singed. Their coats weren’t burned. They didn’t even smell like smoke!

🎬 The three friends walk out of the furnace. Everyone sniffs the air: “Sniff, sniff… NO smoke!”

  9. 👑🙏🎉 “No other God can save like this!”

King Nebuchadnezzar was amazed. He said God had sent His angel to rescue the servants who trusted Him, and that no other god could save people like this. Then he gave the three friends important jobs in Babylon.

🎬 The King bows his head: “Your God is the greatest!” Everyone cheers for the three brave friends.

This week’s challenge

Pray Like Daniel

Pray three times every day this week, just like Daniel: in the morning, sometime in the middle of the day (a quiet prayer at lunch or before something hard counts!), and at night. Tell your family which prayer felt the most special.

Text the parents

Today in Primary we acted out Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego in the fiery furnace, turned into lions whose mouths an angel shut, and knocked over King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream statue with a “stone” that grew to fill the earth, just like the Church of Jesus Christ. The big idea: we can choose the right even when others don’t, and God is with us. Your child’s challenge is to pray three times a day like Daniel. Ask: “What did the three friends say when the king threatened them?” (Our God can save us… but if not, we still won’t bow!)

Got extra time?

🦁 Sleeping Lions · 3 min

  1. Everyone lies on the floor as a sleeping lion with its mouth shut tight, just like the lions in Daniel’s den.
  2. Pick one or two “angels” who walk around and try to make the lions giggle or move, using only funny faces and words. No touching!
  3. Any lion who moves or laughs becomes an angel too. The last sleeping lion wins.
  4. Perfect for the last few minutes of class, or anytime the room needs to calm down fast.

🙏 Pray Anywhere Charades · 4 min

  1. SAY“Daniel prayed at his window. Where can YOU pray?”
  2. Kids take turns acting out a place or moment where they could pray while the class guesses: in bed, on the school bus, before a spelling test, at a soccer game, lost in a store, when a pet is sick.
  3. After each guess, ask: “Would that be a spoken prayer or a quiet prayer in your heart?”
  4. SAY“Heavenly Father hears us anywhere, anytime, just like He heard Daniel.”

🥦 Ten Times Wiser · 4 min

  1. Read Daniel 1:17, 20. God gave the four friends knowledge and wisdom, and the king found them “ten times better” than all his wise men.
  2. In your own words, share the promises of the Word of Wisdom from Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21: health, wisdom, treasures of knowledge, and strength to run without getting tired.
  3. Everyone runs in place for 20 seconds, then walks in place for 20 seconds. Say: “God gives these blessings to people who take care of their bodies His way.”
  4. Ask: “What does the Word of Wisdom ask kids to do?” (Eat good food, get sleep and exercise, and stay away from harmful things like alcohol, tobacco, vaping, coffee, tea and drugs.)

🎨 Draw the Dream · 5 min

  1. Tap Draw & Guess. One kid draws a word from today’s lesson (lion, stone, furnace, window) while the class guesses.
  2. Or give everyone paper and read Daniel 2:31–35 slowly while they draw the king’s dream: gold head, silver chest, brass belly, iron legs, iron-and-clay feet, and the stone.
  3. Ask: “What does the stone stand for?” (God’s kingdom, the Church of Jesus Christ.)
