Jesus Christ suffered and died for us, and on the third day He rose again, so because He lives, I can be forgiven and everyone will live again.

Know the chapters

The manual’s Easter lesson walks day by day through the last week of the Savior’s life: crowds waving branches and shouting “Hosanna” as He rode into Jerusalem (Matthew 21), cleansing the temple so it would be a house of prayer, teaching that serving “the least of these” is serving Him (Matthew 25:40), the Last Supper and Gethsemane (Matthew 26), His Crucifixion (Matthew 27), His ministry to the spirits of the dead while His body lay in the tomb (1 Peter 3:18–20; Doctrine and Covenants 138), and Easter morning (Matthew 28; Luke 24; John 20).

The heart of this lesson is the Resurrection. Early on the first day of the week, women came to the tomb and found the great stone rolled away. Matthew tells of an earthquake and an angel whose clothes were white as snow; the guards shook and fell down. An angel told the women, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said” (Matthew 28:6). Peter and John ran to see the empty tomb. Mary Magdalene stayed, weeping, until a man she thought was the gardener said her name, “Mary,” and she knew Him (John 20:11–16). She ran to tell the disciples that she had seen the Lord (John 20:18). Later He appeared to His Apostles, to Thomas, to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and to the people in the Americas (3 Nephi 11).

For eight-year-olds, make the order clear and simple. Thursday: Jesus gave the first sacrament and suffered in Gethsemane for our sins and sorrows. Friday: He gave His life. Sunday: He rose, with a perfect body that will never die again. Tell the Crucifixion gently and briefly; the children only need to know He chose to give His life because He loves us. Spend your energy on the joy of Sunday morning.

Two truths to leave with them: because Jesus suffered for us, we can repent and be clean (the sacrament helps us remember that every week), and because He was resurrected, everyone will be resurrected too (1 Corinthians 15:22). Some children have lost a grandparent or a pet; this is the most hopeful news you can give them. Paul’s shout of victory in 1 Corinthians 15:55 gives the lesson its title: death does not win.

Read Matthew 28:1–10 and John 20:11–18. Grab a small box and a rock for the empty tomb, and a glove from your coat pocket. Open Teach Mode and let the scenes carry the story drama, teach “He is not here: for he is risen” with the motions, and close with your testimony. Before class

  1. Make the “tomb”: set the empty box (or upside-down cup) on the table and lean the “stone” against its opening. Leave it EMPTY.

  3. Shuffle the papers so the kids can put them in order.
  4. Read Matthew 28:1–10 and John 20:1–18 so you can tell the story drama with confidence.
  5. Think about how you know Jesus lives. You’ll share it at the end, and it’s the most important part of today.

If your class is wild

  • Talk about the tone before the drama: “The first part of our story is quiet and sad. Then it gets SO happy. Can you show me both?” Practice a silent, still face and then a huge smile.
  • Give the Guards to your wiggliest kids. Shaking and flopping down “as dead men” is a hit, and afterward they stay still on the floor.
  • Peter and John race in slow motion only. Real running is for recess.
  • Use the Sunrise Stretch as a reset any time the room gets too loud.
  • Keep the Crucifixion scene short and still. If a child asks a hard question, answer simply and move on to Sunday morning.

The Happiest Empty Box

A closed “tomb” builds suspense for the best surprise in history: it’s empty.

  1. Point to the box with the stone in front. Say quietly: “After Jesus died, His friends laid His body in a tomb carved in rock, and rolled a big stone in front. Soldiers guarded it.”
  2. SAY“On Sunday morning, some women came to the tomb. What do you think they expected to find?” Take two or three answers.
  3. Let one kid who is sitting reverently roll the stone away and open the box. Everyone leans in. EMPTY!
  4. SAY“Empty might be the happiest word of Easter. Let’s find out why!”
🌪️ Only kids with folded arms get to be the one who rolls the stone. You’ll see instant reverence.

The Human Tomb

  1. Four or five kids stand in a circle holding hands with arms raised, making a tomb. One more kid crouches in front of the opening as the big stone.
  2. Say quietly: “After Jesus died, His friends laid His body in a tomb carved in rock, and rolled a big stone in front. Soldiers guarded it.”
  3. SAY“On Sunday morning, some women came to the tomb. What do you think they expected to find?” Take two or three answers.
  4. The stone kid slowly rolls to the side. Everyone else tiptoes up and peeks into the circle. EMPTY! Tap the bells sound on the Sound Board.
  5. SAY“Empty might be the happiest word of Easter. Let’s find out why!”

2. Story

Story Drama: The First Easter Morning

Acting out Easter week lets kids feel the quiet sadness of Friday and the huge joy of Sunday.

  1. Hand out the roles (tap Roles in Teach Mode). Everyone without a role is the Earthquake & Sound Crew.
  2. SAY“Nobody plays Jesus. I’ll read His words. The first four scenes are quiet and reverent. Then get ready for the happiest morning ever.”
  3. Read each scene aloud and pause for the action cue. Go slowly and softly through scenes 1–4.
  4. Set a chair by the tomb for the Angel to sit on after rolling the stone.
  5. At scene 9, pause after the word “Mary.” Ask: “How do you think she felt when He said her name?” Then say: “Jesus knows your name too.”
🌪️ If giggles come during the quiet scenes, stop, lower your voice to a whisper, and wait. Then start the scene again.

Sunrise Stretch

Easter morning becomes a whole-body wiggle that ends in joy.

  1. Everyone curls up small on the floor. Whisper: “It’s dark and quiet. Early Sunday morning.”
  2. SAY“The sun is coming up!” Everyone rises slowly, stretching arms up like sunbeams.
  3. SAY“Earthquake!” Everyone shakes all over. “The stone rolls away!” Roll your arms around each other.
  4. SAY“Go quickly and tell!” Run in place as fast as you can for five seconds.
  5. Freeze, and whisper-shout together: “He is risen!”

4. Object lesson

The Glove and the Hand

A glove makes resurrection easy to see: spirit and body together again, forever.

  1. Hold up the glove. Say: “This glove is like your body.” Wiggle your bare hand: “And my hand is like your spirit, the part of you that lived with Heavenly Father before you were born.”
  2. Put the glove on and wave. Say: “Right now your spirit and body are together, so you can run and laugh and hug.”
  3. Slowly pull your hand out. The glove lies still on the table. Say: “When someone dies, the spirit leaves the body. But the spirit is still alive!” (Wiggle your hand.) “While Jesus’s body lay in the tomb, His spirit went to teach the spirits of people who had died.”
  4. Put the glove back on and hold it up high. Say: “On Easter, Jesus’s spirit and body came back together, perfect, and they will NEVER come apart again. That’s resurrection. And because of Him, everyone will be resurrected someday: your grandparents, your family, and you.”

Body and Spirit Partners

  1. Pick two volunteers. One is the Body: floppy, like a rag doll. The other is the Spirit: they stand right behind the Body with hands on its shoulders.
  2. SAY“Your spirit is the part of you that lived with Heavenly Father before you were born. When your spirit and body are together, you can run and laugh and hug.” The Spirit gently makes the Body wave and walk.
  3. The Spirit steps away. The Body slowly sits down, still. Say: “When someone dies, the spirit leaves the body. But the spirit is still alive!” (The Spirit waves.) “While Jesus’s body lay in the tomb, His spirit went to teach the spirits of people who had died.”
  4. The Spirit comes back and the partners link elbows tightly. Say: “On Easter, Jesus’s spirit and body came back together, perfect, and they will NEVER come apart again. That’s resurrection. And because of Him, everyone will be resurrected someday.”
  5. Let the class try to gently pull the partners apart. They can’t!

5. Scripture

Scripture Spotlight: Matthew 28:6

The angel’s words are the Easter message, and kids can say them with joy.

  1. Show the verse on your phone or tablet and read it slowly.
  2. Teach the motions one phrase at a time.
  3. Say it three ways: a surprised whisper (like the women peeking in), a normal voice, then your happiest “I have to tell everyone!” voice.
  4. Ask: “What did Jesus promise that came true?” (That He would rise again on the third day.)

Holy Week Hop

Kids put the last week of Jesus’s life in order and move through it, ending at the empty tomb.

  1. Hand out the eight shuffled day papers. Together, the class lays them on the floor in order from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, like stepping stones. Help as needed.
  2. Teach the move for each stone: 🌿 wave branches, “Hosanna!” · ⛪ fingertips together, whisper “house of prayer” · 💌 open an invitation · 🤝 give a helping hand · 🍞 fold arms and bow · ✝️ hand on heart, silent · ✨ point up · 🌅 jump and shout “He is risen!”
  3. Kids hop from stone to stone one at a time, doing each move. Everyone else does the moves from their seats.
  4. SAY“Every day of that week, Jesus was showing His love. And it all led to Sunday!”

Human Holy Week

  1. Whisper a day and its pose to eight kids (or give some kids two days): 🌿 Palm Sunday: wave branches · ⛪ Monday: fingertips together like a temple · 💌 Tuesday: open an invitation · 🤝 Wednesday: offer a helping hand · 🍞 Thursday: fold arms and bow · ✝️ Friday: hand on heart, silent · ✨ Saturday: point up · 🌅 Easter: arms up high.
  2. The eight scatter around the room and freeze in their poses.
  3. Everyone else works together to line them up in order, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Help as needed.
  4. When the line is right, walk down it together. Each statue comes alive and says their day. The last one shouts, “He is risen!” and everyone cheers.

  1. Lower your voice and wait for quiet. Share your testimony simply: “I know Jesus Christ suffered for us, died for us, and rose again. I know He lives.” Add a sentence about why it matters to you.
  2. Invite any child who wants to share one sentence about Jesus to do so.
  3. Introduce the Easter Witness challenge on the screen.
  4. Ask a child to say the closing prayer.

    On Thursday night, Jesus ate a special Passover supper with His Apostles. He took bread, blessed it and broke it, and gave them a cup, and He asked them to remember Him. That was the very first sacrament.

    🎬 Everyone folds arms and sits very reverently, like during the sacrament.

  2. 🌳🙏 A prayer in the garden

    Then Jesus went to a garden called Gethsemane to pray. There He felt the weight of every sin, sadness and pain, so He could help us. He prayed to His Father, “Not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

    🎬 Everyone kneels silently and bows their head for five seconds.

  3. ✝️💛 He gave His life for us

    On Friday, Jesus was crucified on a cross. He could have stopped it, but He chose to give His life because He loves us. When He died, the earth shook, and a Roman soldier said, “Truly this was the Son of God.”

    🎬 Everyone sits very still, hand on heart. No sounds at all.

  4. 🪨🌑 A tomb and a big stone

    His friends wrapped His body in clean cloth and laid it in a new tomb carved out of rock. They rolled a great stone in front of the door. Soldiers came to guard it.

    🎬 Everyone pushes an invisible giant stone: “Uhhhh!” The Guards stand stiff and serious.

  5. 💥👼 An earthquake and an angel!

    Early on Sunday morning, there was a great earthquake! An angel came down from heaven, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His face was bright like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. The guards shook with fear and fell down like dead men.

    🎬 Crew rumbles and shakes. The Angel “rolls” the stone. Guards tremble and flop down.

  6. 🌅👩 The stone is rolled away!

    As the sun was coming up, Mary Magdalene and other women came to the tomb carrying spices. The stone was rolled away! Mary Magdalene ran to find Peter and John.

    🎬 The women tiptoe in, then gasp. Mary Magdalene hurries off to get Peter and John.

  7. 👼✨ “He is not here: for he is risen!”

    The angel said to the women, “Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus… He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples…”

    🎬 The women peek in: “It’s empty!” Everyone together: “He is risen!”

  8. 🏃🏃 Peter and John race to the tomb

    Peter and John ran to the tomb as fast as they could. John got there first! Peter went right inside. The cloths that had wrapped Jesus’s body were lying there, but He was gone.

    🎬 Peter and John race in slow motion while everyone cheers in slow motion too.

  9. 😢➡️😊 “Mary.” “Master!”

    Mary stayed outside the tomb, crying. A man asked her why she was weeping. She thought He was the gardener. Then He said just one word: “Mary.” She knew that voice! It was Jesus, alive! She said, “Rabboni,” which means “Master.”

    🎬 Mary wipes her eyes, turns around slowly, and her face bursts into the biggest smile.

  10. 🙌🌍 Mary runs to tell the disciples!

    Mary ran to tell the disciples that she had seen the Lord! Soon Jesus appeared to His Apostles, to Thomas, to friends walking on a road, and even to people in the Americas. He is alive, and He lives today!

    🎬 EVERYONE jumps up: “He is risen! He lives!”

Easter Witness

Like Mary, be a witness! Tell someone in your family, a friend or a grandparent the happy news: “He is risen!” and one reason you love Jesus. During the sacrament next Sunday, think about Him the whole time the bread and water are passed.

We used a glove to learn that resurrection means body and spirit together again forever.   1. Read Matthew 21:8–9. People spread their coats and branches on the road and shouted “Hosanna!” as Jesus rode into Jerusalem.
  2. Kids make a path with their jackets (or pretend), wave arms like palm branches, and shout “Hosanna!” in a joyful parade around the room.
  3. Ask: “How can we welcome Jesus into our lives today?”

  1. Read Matthew 25:35–40. Jesus said that when we feed the hungry, visit the sick or help a stranger, we are doing it for Him.

  1. Read John 20:24–29. Thomas said he wouldn’t believe until he saw Jesus’s hands. Then Jesus came and showed him.
  2. Read verse 29: Jesus blessed those who believe without seeing Him.
  3. Ask: “We haven’t seen Jesus with our eyes. How can we know He lives?” (The Holy Ghost, scriptures, prophets, answered prayers.)

  1. Tell about the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–32). They walked and talked with Jesus without knowing it was Him.
  2. Read Luke 24:32. Their hearts felt warm when He taught them.
  3. Ask: “Have you ever felt warm and peaceful when learning about Jesus? That is the Holy Ghost telling you it’s true.”
