Heavenly Father kept His promise and brought forth the Book of Mormon, a marvelous work that helps me know Jesus Christ.

I can thank Heavenly Father for the Book of Mormon, and I can run to Jesus like a safe shelter when I feel scared or sad.

Know the chapters

Isaiah lived about 700 years before Jesus was born, when big, proud kingdoms like Babylon were pushing Israel around. In chapters 13–14 he says proud Babylon will fall, and in 14:12–15 he describes Lucifer, who wanted to lift himself above God and was cast down. In chapters 24–30 and 35, Isaiah looks far ahead to the last days: the Lord as a shelter in the storm (25:4), the Savior swallowing up death (25:8), perfect peace for those who trust Him (26:3), learning “line upon line” (28:10), a sealed book (29:11–14), and a desert that blossoms like a rose (35:1).

The star of this week for children is Isaiah 29. Isaiah said a voice would “speak out of the ground” and “whisper out of the dust” (29:4), and Nephi used the same picture for the Book of Mormon (2 Nephi 26:16). Isaiah also saw a sealed book that a learned man could not read, given to a man who was not learned (29:11–12). In 1828 Martin Harris took characters copied from the gold plates to Professor Charles Anthon in New York City, and when Martin said part of the plates was sealed, the professor replied that he could not read a sealed book (Joseph Smith—History 1:63–65). Joseph Smith, a young farmer with little schooling, translated by the gift and power of God. Nephi explains the whole prophecy in 2 Nephi 27. Isaiah calls it “a marvellous work and a wonder” (29:14).

Your class runs from four-year-olds who can’t read yet to seven-year-olds getting ready for baptism, so this plan keeps one simple idea, “God brought forth a special book that teaches about Jesus,” and says it many ways. Little ones get sounds, digging, and blooming flowers. Big kids get reading and helper jobs: they read captions and the key verse from your phone or tablet and play Joseph, Martin and the Professor. Tie it to baptism: the Book of Mormon teaches that Jesus was baptized and shows us the way to follow Him (2 Nephi 31:5–10), and anyone who prays about it can feel the Holy Ghost say it is true (Moroni 10:4–5).

Isaiah 25 and 35 add comfort for little hearts. Jesus is a safe place in a storm and cool shade on a hot day (25:4), and someday He will wipe away every tear (25:8). Keep Lucifer and fallen Babylon in the background for this age; the lesson stays bright and hopeful. No child plays Heavenly Father or Jesus; the teacher reads everything, and kids play the prophet, the angel, the people and the flowers.

Wrap a Book of Mormon in a dish towel and tape it shut. Hide it under a chair and open with A Whisper from the Ground. Let your phone or tablet run the story drama, teach “a marvellous work and a wonder” with motions, and play Forehead Guess. Skip the blanket if you need to: tap “I brought nothing” and the shelter becomes a roof made of kids’ arms.

Before class

  1. Wrap the Book of Mormon in paper or a dish towel and tape it shut with lots of tape. Write SEALED on it (or on a sticky note) in big letters.
  2. Just before class, hide the sealed book under a chair, a coat, or the edge of a rug, somewhere low “in the ground.”
  3. Fold the blanket (or close the umbrella) and keep it by your chair for Shelter from the Storm.
  4. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab so you can hand out story roles with one tap.
  5. Decide who gets the reading parts: a 6- or 7-year-old reader is great as Isaiah, Martin Harris or the Professor. Give the Desert Flowers to your youngest.

If your class is wild

  • Ears on the floor is a secret calming trick. Whenever the room gets loud, say, “Shh… is the book whispering?” and everyone lies down to listen.
  • Give the Professor to your most dramatic kid. Tearing up the paper (real or invisible) is a big, satisfying job.
  • The storm has an off switch: when you raise your hand, the storm freezes silent. Practice it once before you start.
  • Pair each 4- or 5-year-old with a 6- or 7-year-old buddy for Forehead Guess. Big kids love helping, and little ones feel brave.
  • If energy spikes, jump straight to Desert to Garden, then come back to where you were.

1. Hook

A Whisper from the Ground

A hidden, whispering book grabs attention and sets up Isaiah’s promise of a book coming out of the ground.

  1. Before anyone sits, say in a hushed voice: “Shh! I think something is hiding in this room. Everybody lie down and put one ear on the floor.”
  2. Crouch near the hidden book and whisper low: “Find me… find me…” Say: “Isaiah said a voice would whisper out of the ground!”
  3. Choose one child who is lying still to tiptoe and find it. Everyone else sits up criss-cross to watch.
  4. Hold up the taped-up book. Say: “It says SEALED. Can anybody read it?” Let two quiet kids try (no tearing!). Say: “A long, long time ago, Isaiah wrote about a sealed book. Let’s find out what it was.”
🌪️ Only kids lying perfectly still can hear the whisper. If they giggle, whisper even quieter and they’ll stop to listen.

The Whispering Kid

  1. Choose one child and whisper in their ear: “You are a secret book. Curl up tight behind that chair and whisper, ‘Find me… find me…’”
  2. Say to everyone else: “Shh! Something is hiding in this room. Lie down and put one ear on the floor.” Say: “Isaiah said a voice would whisper out of the ground!”
  3. Choose one listener to tiptoe and find the book. The book stays curled up tight and says, “I am SEALED!” Tap the knock sound on the Sound Board and let a few kids knock gently on the book’s shoulder.
  4. The book pops open and says, “Surprise!” Say: “A long, long time ago, Isaiah wrote about a sealed book. Let’s find out what it was.”

2. Story

Story Drama: The Book That Whispered from the Ground

Acting out the sealed book coming true lets little bodies move while the big idea sinks in.

  1. Hand out the roles (tap Roles in Teach Mode to assign them from your class list). Everyone left over is a Desert Flower.
  2. SAY“I’ll read the story. You get to be a prophet, an angel, a farmer, a smart professor, and a whole desert full of flowers!”
  3. Big-kid readers: let a 6- or 7-year-old read the caption on each screen before you read the scene. Little ones copy the action.
  4. Read each scene and pause for the action. At scene 6, practice the big line together: “I cannot read a sealed book!”
  5. Finish by unwrapping your sealed book (or opening the Book of Mormon in Gospel Library on your phone or tablet). Say: “Here it is! The book the professor couldn’t read.”

3. Wiggle break

Desert to Garden

Isaiah 35 turns into a full-body wiggle: dry seeds, rain, blooming flowers and leaping deer.

  1. SAY“Isaiah said the desert would bloom! Everyone curl up small like a dry seed in the hot sand.” Fan yourselves: “So hot!”
  2. Make rain: tap fingers on the floor softly, then faster (tap the rain sound on the Sound Board if you like). Grow slowly into tall flowers.
  3. SAY“Isaiah said people who couldn’t walk would leap like a deer!” Everyone does three big deer leaps in place.
  4. SAY“And people who couldn’t talk would sing!” Everyone hums one happy note, then freezes as a statue flower.

4. Object lesson

Shelter from the Storm

Ducking under a blanket while the class makes a rainstorm shows that Jesus is a safe place when life feels stormy (Isaiah 25:4).

  1. Ask a Reading Helper to read Isaiah 25:4 from your phone or tablet: “a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat.” Say: “A refuge is a safe place. Isaiah is talking about Jesus.”
  2. Make a storm together: rub hands (wind), tap fingers (rain), pat legs (big rain), stomp feet (thunder). Tap the thunder sound on the Sound Board.
  3. Open the blanket or umbrella wide with a big-kid helper holding the other side. Say: “Sometimes life feels stormy. Name something that can feel scary or sad.”
  4. Each child who names one (a bad dream, feeling sick, a new school, a friend being mean) ducks under the shelter. Keep the storm going until everyone is safe inside.
  5. Raise your hand to stop the storm. Whisper: “When things feel stormy, we can pray, and Jesus helps us feel safe and peaceful inside. Isaiah said He keeps people who trust Him in perfect peace.”
🌪️ Walking feet only into the shelter. Anyone who dives becomes a Storm Maker and makes the thunder until the next turn.

The Human Shelter

  1. Ask a Reading Helper to read Isaiah 25:4 from your phone or tablet: “a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat.” Say: “A refuge is a safe place. Isaiah is talking about Jesus.”
  2. You and your tallest kid face each other and hold hands up high to make a roof. That’s the shelter!
  3. Make a storm together: rub hands (wind), tap fingers (rain), pat legs (big rain), stomp feet (thunder). Tap the thunder sound on the Sound Board.
  4. Each child who names something that can feel scary or sad (a bad dream, feeling sick, a new school) tiptoes under the roof. Squeeze in close until everyone is safe inside.

Scripture Spotlight: Isaiah 29:14

Six words with big motions give every child, reader or not, Isaiah’s name for the Book of Mormon.

  1. Show the verse on your phone or tablet. Ask a big-kid Reading Helper to read it out loud: “a marvellous work and a wonder.”
  2. SAY“Marvelous means super amazing. A wonder is something that makes you say, ‘WOW!’ Isaiah was talking about the Book of Mormon.”
  3. Teach the motions one phrase at a time. Say it three ways: a tiny whisper from the ground (lie down low), a normal voice, and a big trumpet voice standing on tiptoes.
  4. Ask your 7-year-olds: “The Book of Mormon tells how Jesus was baptized to show us the way. Who is getting ready to be baptized too?” Let them wave.

A picture guessing game reviews the story, and the pictures let non-readers give clues too.

  1. Tap Forehead Guess. A guesser holds your phone or tablet on their forehead, screen facing the class.
  2. Everyone else looks at the picture and gives clues without saying the word. Little ones can act it out: dig for gold plates, leap for deer, stomp for storm.
  3. Big kids can read the hint under the picture if the class gets stuck.
  4. Tilt down for “got it,” up to pass. Give each guesser about 30 seconds, then pass your phone or tablet. Pair a little one with a big-kid buddy when it’s their turn to guess.

  1. Sit close in a circle. Ask one question at a time. Let two or three kids answer each, and share your own answer too.
  2. Little ones can answer by pointing or showing: “Show me how you look when…”

A Book I Love

End calm and reverent, holding the real book Isaiah saw, with a simple way to enjoy it at home.

  1. Lower your voice. Hold up the Book of Mormon (or show it in Gospel Library on your phone or tablet) and let a few children gently touch the cover.
  2. SAY“Isaiah saw this book long before it came. Moroni promised that when we pray about it, the Holy Ghost helps us feel that it’s true.” Share one or two sentences about how you know the Book of Mormon is true, or a story from it you love.
  3. Introduce the Marvelous Book Nights challenge on the screen.
  4. Ask a child to say the closing prayer. Little ones can repeat a prayer after you, a few words at a time.

    A long, long time ago, God showed the prophet Isaiah something that would happen far in the future. A book would come whispering out of the ground, and part of it would be SEALED shut. Isaiah wrote it all down.

  2. 🙏👼 An angel visits Joseph Smith

    Many, many years later, a teenage boy named Joseph Smith knelt to pray. A bright angel named Moroni came to his room! Moroni told Joseph about a record written on gold plates, hidden in a hill near his home.

    🎬 Joseph kneels. Moroni stands tall. Everyone shields their eyes from the bright light: “Ooooh!”

  3. ⛰️📙 Gold plates hidden in a hill

    Joseph went to the hill, dug away the dirt, and lifted a big stone. There they were: the gold plates! A few years later, God let Joseph take them home. They were heavy, and part of them was sealed. Joseph was told to leave the sealed part closed. It was a book coming out of the ground, just like Isaiah said.

    🎬 Everyone digs: “Dig, dig, dig!” Lift the heavy plates: “Ugh!” Then lock the sealed part with a key: “CLICK!”

  4. ✍️🚶 Martin carries the strange letters

    Joseph copied some of the strange letters from the plates onto paper. His friend Martin Harris wanted to help, so he carried the paper far away to a big city to show a very smart teacher called a professor.

    🎬 Martin waves goodbye and walks in place. Everyone marches with him: “Left, right, left, right!”

  5. 🎓🤔 The smart professor looks closely

    Professor Anthon looked at the letters very closely. He said they looked real and even wrote a note saying so. Then he asked, “Where did these come from?”

    🎬 The Professor pushes up his pretend glasses: “Hmmm… very interesting!” Everyone rubs their chin: “Hmmm!”

  6. 🔒😲 “I cannot read a sealed book!”

    Martin told him an angel had shown Joseph the plates. The professor tore up his note! He said, “Bring me the plates.” Martin said part of them was sealed. And the professor said almost exactly what Isaiah wrote: “I cannot read a sealed book.”

    🎬 The Professor tears the paper (real or invisible): “RRRIP!” EVERYONE together: “I cannot read a sealed book!” Then a big gasp.

  7. 👦✨✍️ God helps Joseph translate

    Isaiah said the book would be given to someone who was not learned. Joseph hadn’t gone to school very much, but God gave him power to translate the plates into words we can read. Emma wrote the words down.

    🎬 Joseph looks at the plates. Emma writes. Everyone makes sparkle fingers: “Twinkle, twinkle!”

  8. 📘🌸 A marvelous work and a wonder!

    The Book of Mormon was printed, and now children all over the world read it in their own languages. It teaches about Jesus Christ. Isaiah called it “a marvellous work and a wonder,” and it happened just as he said, like a dry desert bursting into flowers!

    🎬 The Desert Flowers curl up small, then BLOOM, arms wide. Everyone shouts, “MARVELOUS!”

This week’s challenge

Marvelous Book Nights

Open the Book of Mormon with your family every night this week. Read or listen to one verse, look for Jesus in it, and finish by doing the motions for “a marvellous work and a wonder!”

Text the parents

This week we learned that Isaiah saw a sealed book long before it came, and it came true with the Book of Mormon. We acted out Martin Harris and the professor who said, “I cannot read a sealed book,” and we hid under a shelter from a pretend storm to learn that Jesus keeps us safe. 🌼 Blooming Paper Flowers · 5 min

  1. Cut simple paper flowers (about 4 inches across) and help each child fold the petals tightly into the middle.
  2. Read Isaiah 35:1: “the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.”
  3. Count down together and float the flowers on a bowl of water. Watch the petals slowly open. Say: “Jesus can make sad, dry, hard things bloom again.”

🧥 A Peg That Holds · 3 min

  1. Try to hang a jacket on a pencil held loosely in the air. It falls! Then hang it on a strong hook or doorknob. It stays.
  2. SAY“Isaiah described a leader fastened like a nail in a sure place, strong enough to hold everything hung on it (Isaiah 22:23). It reminds us of Jesus. He is strong and steady, and we can hang all our worries on Him.”

🕊️ Perfect Peace Breathing · 2 min

  1. SAY“Isaiah said the Lord keeps people who trust Him in perfect peace” (Isaiah 26:3).
  2. Everyone breathes in slowly while you count to four (smell a flower), then out slowly (blow out a candle). Do it three times.
  3. Whisper: “When I feel upset, I can breathe, pray, and trust Jesus.”
